mr2mk1g 10 #2 February 7, 2005 News over here are reporting it as a "leaking gas heater" caused their deaths. This annoyed me as it makes it seem like it's the campsite's fault for having poor equipment leaking gas. It was carbon monoxide poisoning pure and simple through the fault of the dumbasses who lit the stoves. Sad... but a little education or just common sense on the part of any one of the 18 would have saved all their lives. If the news agencies reported it correctly at least some of the remaining dumbasses have the opportunity to learn from it.
Bodyflight.Net 0 #3 February 7, 2005 QuoteLA TODOLELLA, Spain (Reuters) - Eighteen friends who rented a Spanish mountain hostel for a birthday party were found dead on Sunday, apparently killed by a gas leak, officials said. It was the worst death toll in a gas leak in Spain in at least 15 years, Spanish media reports said. The bodies were found at the remote Sant Cristofol hostel near the picturesque medieval village of La Todolella, some 300 km (180 miles) east of Madrid. "We are all devastated. It's terrible," Alicia de Miguel, an official in the Valencian regional government, told state radio. She said the 18 dead were aged between 22 and 40. About 50 people, all from the local area, had gone to the birthday party at the hostel on Saturday night and the dead had stayed the night there. The dead were all from nearby villages in an economically depressed area where everybody knows each other. De Miguel said the deaths were apparently due to a malfunctioning gas heater that the party-goers had taken with them to warm up a cold night. The mayor of La Todolella, Alfredo Querol, said the probable cause was a leaking butane bottle. He said two people who slept in a different room survived. "They had a party last night, for one guy's birthday, and some of them stayed at the hostel to sleep. All those who slept there, apart from two who were in a separate room, are dead," he told Cadena Ser radio. A judge was dispatched to oversee the recovery of the bodies, which were to be taken to the nearby coastal city of Castellon for autopsy, media reports said. The head of the Valencia regional government, Francisco Camps, was on his way to La Todolella, a village of 140 people, and psychologists were sent to help relatives deal with the shock. "We will provide all possible measures of psychological support to the families," de Miguel said. The Sant Cristofol hostel is a 15th century building often used as a base for hiking, mountain biking and riding. From Reuters http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=7549701 We use camping heaters at the WFFC every year.. they are propane, not butane and have built in charcoal filters... too bad they didn't have that type for themselves. Zep 0 #5 February 7, 2005 First. it was not a gas leak as the hostel does not have gas thier heating is fuel oil Second. the owner told them that there was no heating as they hired the rooms out of season. Third. the youngsters used thier own camping gas heaters. It was pure an simple. Carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have a flame an no ventilation sooner or later you will run out of air, a charcoal filter will not save you. I repeat without proper ventilation you will DIE wheather it be Propane or Butane Gone fishing

Kbone 0 #7 February 8, 2005 I've slept in trailers that had the big propane tank with that screw on heater grille they sell at BIG 5. It looked pretty safe, no open flame, just a red coil. Is this dangerous?

Is this dangerous? It's not recomended but if you do sleep with it alight make shure you have a vent at floor level an another vent at ceiling hight. You'll still probably wake up with a headache Gone fishing

REMEMBER Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air, so the alarm must be situated a few inches off the floor If you sleep on a futon ........don't Gone fishing
flyangel2 2 #11 February 8, 2005 What about those Coleman portable catalytic space heaters that say they are safe to use in your tent? They use propane. I have one like this.
