Ear Infection?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure there really is one, other than treating symptoms...

... my kid's pediatrician explained ear infections like this:

"We can give them antibiotics and get rid of it in about a week... or, we can let it take it's course and it'll go away in about 7 days...."

Thanks Mike! I'm hoping it will go away on its own- I'd sure hate to haul all my gear down there and not be able to use it. Not that it would be so tragic to spend a week laying on the beach sipping pina coladas!;) My sinuses never bother me in Mexico and I think this may be sinus related, so I'm crossing my fingers!

Note: I have no medical training.

I assume you are talking about an infection of the external ear canal, aka "external otitis"? I've had it several times, usually as a result of getting water in my ears from freshwater rivers or lakes. (It never happened in saltwater).

The usual routine was to go to the doctor, who would push a cotton wick in my ear, and prescribe a prescription for Burow's Solution to keep the wick wet a few days. Then I found an over-the-counter variant of Burow's Solution called Domeboro. Since then I've used that on my own with success.

It is also a good idea to rinse your ears with rubbing alcohol after being in freshwater rivers or lakes to kill any bacteria you have picked up.

Yes, outer ear. Maybe trapped moisture from wearing tight earmuffs out in the frigid weather? Maybe sinus related? When I was a kid, we used to put a little rubbing alcohol or witch hazel in our ears for "swimmer's ear". I may try that!

thats what I do and it clears it up... plus it gets rid of any water left in your outer ear, which gets annoying.

Go the the doctor, get the eardrops. Should clear up in a few days.

I got an outer ear infection once from using wax earplugs(I lived next to an airport, low flying jets make a lot of noise). It started to involve the ear drum. I could tell, it hurt alot, especially when popping.

The drops cleared it right up.

If you have an outer ear infection, changes in pressure will not be an issue. If you have an inner ear infection, then changes in pressure are not good. Sinus problems are associated with inner ear infections. Moisture in your ear canal are associated with outer ear infections.

You definately do not want to travel to warm climates. This will only cause additional discomfort and posiibly increase the risk of making it worse.

The best thing you can do is expose the offending ear to cold wind, if there are small ice crystals inthe air stream it would be much better for you. I suggest that you consider giving me your ticket to travel with Gomie and keep him company while you stay here and shovel my driveway. ;)

I would be willing to sacrafice myself for you in this way since you are such a dear friend. Anyway who would really want to spend a week with that guy on a warm beach or skydiving in the buff over the blue Pacific anyway!!! :D

That way you could also pick up your Mole and chocolate from my house. Two birds with one stone, love ya girl.
