ladyskydiver 0 #3 January 27, 2005 hmm....if I was being warned that means that I'm already at the shop getting them checked out so I'd have them replaced immediately so that I could drive.Life is short! Rebecca 0 #4 January 27, 2005 Ditto what Cora said. If not at the shop, nope, I ain't driving. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

kinney29 0 #6 January 27, 2005 I drove for 2 weeks without brakes. I kept one hand on the emegency brake and one on the wheel. Probably the stupidest thing I ever did, but i needed to get around and didn't have the money for new ones.

JohnRich 4 #8 January 27, 2005 Quote . . . you were warned that, at any moment in time, your brakes would fail? Of course not. I'd have the car towed to a shop to be checked by a certified brake man. I actually had my brakes fail once. Not a fun experience. I was approaching a red light, with cross traffic. Went to slow down, and... nothing happened! Fortunately I was in the country, and the choice I had to make was: 1) do I drive through the barbed-wire fence and into the cow pasture on the right?; or 2) do I drive through the barbed-wire fence and into the cow pasture on the left? I ended up getting stopped in time using the emergency brake, but I was really eyeballing those cow pastures! As for the skydiving analogy I think you are making, that's why we have reserve parachutes.

Crazy thing is I somehow managed to get it home without killing the engine once. Ended up having to shift into neutral at stop signs (took the back roads home) and get a little bit of a running start to get going. BlueEyedMonster 0 #15 January 27, 2005 Yes, I can just as easily downshift and use my park break if necessary... Kind of like if my main fails and I have to use my reserve.

When I compare the number of times they have saved my ass to the number of times they havent, teamed with the regular inspection and maintenance performed by myself, probability is on my side. I am however aware of the consequences and am confident in my ability to react if they should fail. I am fully prepared to accept the risk of driving a car with brakes that may fail at any time. With my current track record, I am far more likely to be crushed like a tin can than to have my brakes fail. ________________________________________ I have proof-read this post 500 times, but I guarantee you'll still manage to find a flaw. linny 1 #24 January 28, 2005 If I knew my breaks wouldn't work, I'd be certain to think long and hard about who or what I'm gonna point my car at. Would definitely be a good time.
billvon 3,029 #25 January 28, 2005 Sure. I fly as if my engine could fail at any moment (which several of my CFI's kept telling me it could.) If someone said "your brakes can fail!" I'd say "Uh, OK." If he said "your brakes have a problem and will likely fail soon" then I'd figure out what he was talking about - and if there was really a problem I'd fix them before I'd drive again. BTW side note - you can die while posting!
