AOL shutting down newsgroups

Ok, they're not shutting them down, just no longer providing them as a service to members. Does that means it's Oct 1 now?

I've been using AOL for 8 years or so and I subscribe to several newsgroups. It's a simple ISP that lets me connect from anywhere easily and fairly cheaply...and that's all it does for me. I use a different usenet server, a different e-mail service, a different web browser, etc... That said, I am cancelling AOL within the next month or two. Cable access has gotten cheaper than AOL's dial-up rate, and getting online while on the road is much easier than it was several years ago and no longer requires long-distance surcharges.

Well, AOL has all kind of bad practices, no point in turning this into a bashing thread. But just research their history with Nullsoft, spamming, personal information leaks. The have not done anyone on the net a lot of good.

BUT, that aside, this is probably a purely economic decision that makes sense. Most people don't use newsgroups much anymore, and most people use a seperate server, as a lot of ISPs limit binary access for liability concerns.

I used to use Randori server, but have not in a while, because at the moment, the content was spam ridden and not the best source anymore.

I use newsgroups all the time www.giganews.com for downloading binaries like games and software and movies (all non-copyright, of course )

Can't beat it especially when I can download from our data center at 30Mbs from giganews servers. Only 11 bucks a month for all the free software, movies, and PORN I want!!
