So... tell me about Atlanta, GA

Recommended Posts

I'm so fed up with the cold, politics, taxes, bad drivers, lack of jobs and cost of living here...

Ok, mostly the freakin' cold. I hate it here... I hate the snow and am dying to leave after my graduation in May.

We reached a compromise from either AZ or FL to Atlanta, GA area. Lots of jobs and the cost of living (rent) seems good.

Tell me the good/bad about Atlanta if you're 'in the know'.

Thanks all!

I'm in Atlanta!!! That decides it, right? ;)

Actually, Atlanta is fun, and there's a little bit of everything-- freaky hippie places in Little Five Points (which I love); yuppie places like the Highlands and Buckhead; Six Flags; Stone Mountain and several parks for outdoorsy stuff; 3 good dropzones nearby; and most of all, very little snow. It snows so infrequently that everything shuts down when it does, which is awesome. :D

I know I'm missing stuff . . . tell me what you want (and don't want), and I'll tell you if we have it.

I was hoping you were still 'around' Kel ;)

I want a place with some life! Hubby's other 'compromise' of Cincinnati, OH just didn't cut it. The jobs seem pretty good and the rent seems cheap, and 3 DZs sounds good (although not a deciding factor at all) and best of all - predictable (for the most part) weather.

I want a place you can do lots in - a place with history and lots of do/see and experience. I love New England for those things but I can only enjoy them for 4 months a year which sux ass...

mostly, I want to be warm... I'm so tired of the cold/wind/snow and its only January [:/] If we did decide to move it'd be late summer/fall before it actually happened.

Oh yeah, good point, Chris. Traffic, and THIS IS NOT A WAKLING CITY. It's a driving city, so if you aren't cool with that, you wouldn't be happy here. IF and ONLY IF you live in midtown can you possibly walk anywhere (without driving first).

Actually, I think it's worse up there, but it's also just different. The roads themselves, however, are much better down here.

I've driven extensively in both areas - Give me Boston traffic any day. Atlanta has the WORST traffic I have EVER seen.

Life would suck without you to hang with.... so move the biz to Atlanta!! :$ Michael won't mind :D

My family is not going anywhere, so you can be sure I'll be 'going home' often. I just hate the cold weather... gimme the desert any day, just that Shawn won't go to AZ.

Its cccccoooollllldddd here :S Need....to..get...warm....

I'd rather drive and vent to everyone around me about how stupid they are than ride Marta

Agreed. Marta is cool for getting to the airport though. Specially if you have a flight leaving near rush hour. Otherwise Marta doesn't seem to serve much purpose :)

there's the other atlantian I was hoping would see this thread! ;)

Did you find cost of living vs. pay to be vastly different? Similar to you guys I'll be just finishing my degree so there's a career change (best time to go IMO) in the works too.

Atlanta rocks - thats good to hear :)

In the city and alpharetta areas I found the pay scale relatively comparable to Boston. I just switched jobs from MA and upped my salary.

There's a good market for software engineers here too, but as always experience will dictate how the market receives you.

Cost of living I find pretty close with it being a little cheaper here for just about everything except property. Property is WAY WAY cheaper than Boston. It gets very cheap the further away from the city you are, but you'll pay for that savings in time with worse commutes.

ding ding ding! We have a winner! :D

A ranch in Cranston, RI (the city that had its finances taken over by the state and now has the highest tax rate in RI) is listed at $533,000.

WTF??! Who can get started here when property sells for that?? Who?? It's like running down a hallway, seeing the end, but never actually getting to it [:/]

we bought a townhouse in the middle of the city, 2200 sq ft+, 2 car garage, fireplace and all the fun goodies for less than $280,000. Try buy that in the middle of Boston for that price.

edit: Property taxes are high though, as is sewage.

ya, try getting that in Providence now too [:/]

Sounds like a good deal - you guys obviously really like it there. There were twice as many software type of jobs listed for the atlanta area than boston/providence... thats gotta tell you something. He'll find work no problem, me on the other hand... well, my internship this semester should help.
