Now that made a great VW. Water cooled R.I.P. rjackson 0 #27 January 17, 2005 Quote Once upon a time I had a '69 pop top VW camper. Drove it coast to coast, including over 12,000ft in the Rockies with 7 on board. Man, was it ever slow at altitude. The V6 helped with that. Pulling a trailer up the Cajon pass in So Cal fully loaded was great.--------------------------------------------- Randy
mx757 4 #28 January 17, 2005 mar, they don't make full camper versions any more. the new VW eurovan MV come with pop top, fold down bed . but they are pricy $31K and up. The best year Vanagon Westfalia Campers were the 1986 to 1991 model years. the Eurovan's 1992 to 94/95 are inline Audi 5 cylinders and hard to find. these had lot problems I heard..The 96 to 99 are VR-6- V-6 engines, The VR6 engines are very good. and these too are bit pricy around $25K These were Winnibago convesions and given temp in Colo you might like these as the have LP furnaces in them too for winter use. If you buy a Vanagon Westfalia expect to pay betwen 8K to 14K (later models are more pricy) but I'd get a new rebuilt engine for it ($2000.00) if I were you.. and have cooling system hoses replaced (500 for hoses alone) the cooling system looks like VW designers were on drugs when designed.. so many hoses! and if you break one while traveling good luck as it'll take you 3 to 5 ays get another the auto parts stores won't have them. I replaced all my hoses last year and kept old ones for emergency spares. my 90 horse power 2.1 liter engine has 160K miles on it never rebuilt. no problems either... but I'm hoping to do engine swap to 230 HP Subie a SVX motor in 2 years or so.. good sorces to find these campers are. www.thesamba.com and www.westfalia.org on the 1984 to 1991 vanagon Westfalia camper with the 1.9 or 2.1L engines these tend to have head gasket problems. mine has 160K and no problems. mx757 4 #29 January 17, 2005 the eurovan pop top doesn't go up as high as the bay window aircooled or vanagon Westfalia models. you get lot more head room in these pop tops.
GeordieSkydiver 0 #30 January 17, 2005 Quote I love those VW vans. I so want one. Do they make them anymore? You can actually buy BRAND NEW old style (bay window) VW camper vans imported from Brazil, where they still build them. Its wierd, but good. PS Mine IS actually air cooled, its one of the last ones.Lee _______________________________ In a world full of people, only some want to fly, is that not crazy? http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk
mx757 4 #31 January 17, 2005 true, but the ones from Brazil, have the upright bug very under powered bug engine in them, where the later bay windows have the strong flat type 4 engine in them..

Oh, for the Chevy V6 guy, was that a Corsair engine? Those are nearly direct dropins, pretty much just an adapter plate and some sheet metal.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." slug 1 #33 January 17, 2005 Quote true, but the ones from Brazil, have the upright bug very under powered bug engine in them, where the later bay windows have the strong flat type 4 engine in them.. Our van had the upright air cooled 1.6 liter engine it. That engine puts out the same amount of heat for a camper that it does for a Beetle Back in the day the VW's were populer in certain groups of people because they were inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to maintain, could take a beating and keep on ticking. A lot of those advantages no longer exist unless maybe you live in BrasilIMO when looking at vans consider the intital cost and the options available with other vans (or school buses. More Power, Heat, AC. BTW anyone know of a VW double cab pickup for saleR.I.P.
AggieDave 6 #34 January 17, 2005 Quote BTW anyone know of a VW double cab pickup for sale Soft top for the bed would be nice. The old Type 2 variant? Good luck...those that have them don't sell them and the rare time you see them for sale, they're expensive. Your best bet would be to go pickup a VW Trends or a Hot VWs and look for a VW show in your area. Go there, start asking questions. OR You're gonna have to find one and restore it yourself.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
