ACMESkydiver 0 #1 January 13, 2005 Anyone ever had a child with Whooping Cough? I thought it was just a funny name for a nasty cough...never imagined it was as bad as this. Click on the 'See Pertussis'. It's really scary. I've been up for 3 nights now with my son that sounds like that...every morning he's fine, but at night he sounds like he's going to choke to death. My 3 kids and I just got a Whooping cough culture done (and it SUCKS. It's a metal wire with a swab at the end that goes in your nose all the way to the back...it hurts and makes your eyes tear.) -I had a vagel response to it... -that's when you either throw up or pass out because of a stimulus. It was awful for mine, but I held it together because my kids were watching and they were next...I had to hold my daughter down to get hers, and her swab made her nose bleed a little, and I promptly fell backwards as she was yelling...I had to lay down on the ground for about 5 minutes. I told them I felt fine and got up, and the nurses were yelling at me to lay back down I was about to fall down. Weird, because I couldn't tell...but they all said my face was bright green and my lips had no color and I was wobbling. They had to hold the boys down to get theirs; they wouldn't let me off the ground to help. Today kinda sucked. I'm really worried for little Derick... Has anyone had this?? How long does it last? Derick has not been 'diagnosed' yet, the first culture comes back tomorrow...until tomorrow evening, we have to stay in our house.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. mailin 0 #5 January 13, 2005 Never had it... but shared a hotel room with a HS friend during a band trip who's little sister had it. I had to get tested (although it was not like yours) and she had to call the hotel and all the places we'd been (the trip was to canada, so you can imagine what a pain in the ass that was). Good luck! That sounds awful JenArianna Frances

Brigitte36 0 #7 January 13, 2005 I had a college apartment house near me quarantined once because of that. They were pissed because it was at Spring Break. It is very rough for the little ones though. It sounds like you are very sick yourself though even if it is negative! I hope you feel better!!

Never had it, the below sight explains about the infection, prevention by vaccine which it says is routine, and treatment. It sounds pretty serious. Wish you the best of luck. I suppose your kids didn't get the vaccine they spoke of. It's a shame if doctors aren't making parents aware of what vaccines should be done:( Take care, wish you the best. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/whooping_cough.html

It's a shame if doctors aren't making parents aware of what vaccines should be done:( Take care, wish you the best. DTap was a vaccination I believe we declined due to the boys' Autism. If it was a combination vaccine, we declined it. If it was a single dose vaccine, they got it. -I'm pretty sure it was a multiple though... FYI all, reason being is that Autistics have a weaker immune system...and vaccinations can actually cause the very diseases they are meant to prevent even in 'healthy' people...I was about the sickest I've ever been after a flu vaccination a few years back, but that's a poor example...we're talking weak immune systems and introducing multiple diseases simultaneously...not good for the lil' guys. Unfortunately, as I just learned, Washington state is 3rd highest in Whooping Cough break-outs in the country...so we're in one of those darned if ya do, darned if ya don't deals...~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Lindsey 0 #14 January 13, 2005 It was pretty much gone, then people stopped getting their kids immunized. The immunization does not give you life-long immunity, so adults who were immunized as children can still get pertussis. In adults, though, the symptoms are usually not as severe, and it may not seem like anything more than a cold and cough. There are 3 stages to the illness. In the first stage, you have cold symptoms. It's most contagious in this stage. It usually lasts about a week, or maybe 2. In the next stage, kids get the horrible "whooping" cough. It's still contagious for about 3 weeks, or a week after starting Erythromycin. This stage lasts from 1-6 or 8 weeks. It can be very dangerous for children in this stage, and they should be followed closely by the doctor. In the third stage, the cough is still present, but it's not so bad. This stage may last for several weeks to months. So sorry your kids are feeling bad, ACME. No fun.... How old are they? I know I've seen pictures, but it's been a while.... linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. ACMESkydiver 0 #15 January 13, 2005 The boys are 7 now...daughter is 8. The boys were asleep by 8:30pm thankfully, they were exhausted from the whole clinic ordeal... The kids can't go back to school yet today until test results come back, and the Sprouty was pretty dissapointed, until we let her stay up late last night with us and watch 'Master and Commander' (good movie, BTW) and daddy brought us girls home ice cream. Derick didn't cough at all last night, so that's GREAT! He had a HUGE dose of Zithromax...will continue here for I think it's 3 more days...so whether or not it was Pertussis, we're getting it taken care of thankfully. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. craichead 0 #20 January 13, 2005 QuoteIt was pretty much gone, then people stopped getting their kids immunized. Wow, this topic makes me livid! I completely fail to understand why parents do not get their healthy children immunized. It is selfish and extremely idiotic to put their children's health and lives in danger of preventable and serious diseases because of some whacked out ideology or conspiracy theory. ACME has very good reasons for having to skip some immunizations for her kids, so I understand that. However, I've heard really lame excuses like: - Vaccinations cause X disease (ADD/ADHD, autism, MS, etc.) - I never got immunized, and I'm okay - Everybody else is immunized so it's fine (relying on herd immunity-so everyone else has to get immunized for your benefit?!) - It's just a huge money-making scheme of the pharmaceuticals - It's a ruse from doctors, the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics Arrrgh. I can't stand it. Yeah, my father (radiologist), sister (pediatrician) and brother-in-law (pediatric cardiologist), are all in cahoots with the CDC and the AAP to pull the wool over everybody's eyes. I'll be sure to put on my tinfoil hat on the next time I visit them. _Pm Edited to add: ACME, I'm glad all of your family is okay! __ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
