cvfd1399 0 #1 January 11, 2005 I have a new gateway notebook with a AMD64 bit capible athlon processor. I currently run regular windows xp 32 bit version. I see that Microsoft has a link that lets you download or order(you pay ship n handeling) the version of xp64 bit for free. They say that it still runs the 32 bit, but I am worried that my software and games will not work once I install the new 64 bit ?windows xp. Anyone know more about this than me. teamhypoxia 0 #3 January 11, 2005 I've downloaded it. I think I'll try running it on a spare hard drive just to check it out. I'd back everything up first if you decide to try it.
PhreeZone 20 #4 January 11, 2005 Its still in early Beta. Lots of bugs still unreported/Unfixed. Plus its a timed version that will expire I believe in September of this year. Its great to play around on... but for a day to day OS stay on the 32 bit.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
cvfd1399 0 #5 January 11, 2005 Thanks I looked around the site knowing that it was not a good full version with no time limit, but did not find anything saying that. I will wait for the full overpriced version to come out.
PhreeZone 20 #6 January 11, 2005 Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is currently in development and is being designed to meet the needs of technical workstation users and PC enthusiasts who demand the highest performance and scalability. Please note that in either case, the pre-release software is time-limited and will expire in 360 days. So my Sept date was wrong... Zep 0 #7 January 11, 2005 I love masochists, xp32bit barley cuts it, Now we've got a true hero who wants to double his problems. I heard that xp64bit version instead of having the "BLUE" screen MS made it a soothing green (cause you'll be seeing more of it) AMD with Linux way to go for the future Intel Shnintel on a more serious note, If you need the floating point Better AMD If you're more of a sheep go with Intel If your just out an out crazy, then a Mac's for you Just my opinion. ChasingBlueSky 0 #8 January 11, 2005 Don't bother if you are looking to use it for gaming. Driver support is terrible at the moment and many of the bigger names ( ie Creative) do not support it yet. An interesting side note - MS pull support and development of the Itanium based OS this month. Therefore there will not be an Intel specific version of the 64bit OS now. I wouldn't hold your breath on this OS being done any time soon. It was supposed to launch the same day as the AMD64 - and as you can see, they still don't have it out. Just be happy that the AMD64 can run your 32bit stuff just a bit faster for now._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... DontPanic 0 #9 January 11, 2005 From most of the things I hear about 64 bit operating systems on the current batch of Intel and AMD 64 bit processors, you will not see much if any speed improvements. The main benefit right now for 64 bit operating systems is to address more than 2 Gig of RAM. There are a few other benefits, but the main benefit offered by the current crop of 64 bit Windows and Linux Operating Systems is the ability to use more than 2 Gig of RAM. Benchmarks between 64bit and 32bit show significant differences with the 64bit being faster. True, you can address a much larger memory space than a 32bit CPU can, but the big advantage of the 64bit is just that...64bit. 64bit in code handling and instruction execution.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
DontPanic 0 #11 January 12, 2005 Slashdot has a really recent discussion on Windows XP 64: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=135403&threshold=2&mode=nested&commentsort=0&op=Change They refer to a ZDnet review of the latest release of Windows XP 64 http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/os/0,39024180,39183101-6,00.htm Maybe we're talking about different aspects of Windows XP 64, but I'm still hearing the same general message from both of these sources. There are a few 64 bit apps that really shine on a 64 bit operating system, but there aren't many 64 bit apps ready for Windows XP 64. Your current applications and games are mostly 32 bit apps that will run about the same on a 64 bit OS as compared to a 32 bit OS.
