Why to keep old Parachutist/Skydiving Magazines

Recommended Posts

I was reviewing the classifieds on this site this afternoon (shit weather and stuck indoors. It's freaking COLD outside!)....anyway....as I was saying, doing some browsing and came across someone's ad who was selling 3 years of Parachutists magazines. Guess he/she wanted to clean out the house....

So, since I had nothing better to do, I decided to re-file my stack of magazines sitting here beside me....it's piled waist high! I had to laugh when I got down the pile to 1997...August to be exact...and saw the cover page! It's my mentor and friend Jim Wallace with Paige MacDonald as his tandem student! Major Dave of Aerial Focus is the photographer.

Sweet memories. Where's Paige now? And Major Dave? Jim's no longer at Elsinore, but graces us at Perris these days.

I know that I might not read my stored magazines very much, but it sure is nice to sit down occasionally and remember...besides, they make a great reference of the past tool.

On these rainy days of winter, take the time to browse back in time....what have you found that sparks a memory? A feeling? A reference?

I have a foot high stack of parachute magazines from the 60's (20 years before I was born)

They are an interesting browse on rainy days to see where the sport started and evolved from.

I just got my hands on a May 1959 Popular Mechanics which has an article in it "Bail out for fun?" ... The article kicks ass

At our Dz we have Parachutist from 1970 to 2004 in a big box. If you grab a few from each decade you can see the evolution of the sport and some scarey old gear. Look in the Awards section and I bet you'll see some of your instructors.

Exactly!

To see the evolution of photography as well and how it got started. Do you know that the very first sanctioned air-to-air video of RW competition was in 1988. I have an original video from our U.S. Nationals from that year. You can sit and laugh at how they started, then awe over the fact that they were trail blazers in something that now we take for granted.

I've got a pretty complete set of Parachutist going back to 1971.

I'll put that year in my gearbag and bring it out if it's clear next Sunday (1/16/05)

It's supposed to clear Wednesday. I hope, I hope.

We ALL hope for a reprieve from this weather. [:/] I heard that Seattle, WA isn't getting as much as we are these days!

As for the magazines...YEAH bring them over! It'd be great to see where we've all come from. Any 'newbie' pics of you, Harry? ;)

I'll bring my photo album.

I still have my first cheapo in my garage. Checked the date of manufacture and lost a bet with Janna. She is 3 months older!

I stopped holding onto them after a bit of a Tyler Durden-ian "the things you own end up owning you" awakening.

But I'll NEVER give up my McDonald's Garfield collectible mugs!

I just tossed my first year in USPA's collection. they were ratty and tattered. I kept the ones that had submisions from friends and letters that I had submitted. the rest were tossed.
try to keep about 2 -3 years worth. it depends how they look when I do my "throw everything away" cleaning.

most dz.s I have been to have a collection of the mags but I havent seen one from the 70's yet.

Some of the articles on 4-way by JH are excellent knowledge. I cut those out.

A teammate of mine last year cut out all the articles and put them in a binder. Nicely done and under plastic for reference. I was impressed, but what the heck...I'm the cameraflyer. :P

I'm the other way. I never even open my copy of Parachutist. It just goes straight in the recycle bin. I've always been like that though. I find reading about it or watching videos of it painfully dull. I much prefer to o do it instead.

That's us, but we're even more lucky to get the privilege of paying for 2 of them each month.
