CrazyIvan 0 #26 January 3, 2005 QuoteYou know that sounds kinda right. I've found that programming actually applications is easier for me than web site design. Web design is much more of a graphic artists type of job. I find it fustrating. I know what you mean, I can write a nice code in a matter of minutes, but, a website? dang!!!, that's my weakness because of the graphic design __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. Avion 0 #27 January 3, 2005 You know what the really fustrating part was that the websites I did, actually attracted new business for the customer, and they still had problems with it. I have since stopped offering to do any more sites.
CrazyIvan 0 #28 January 3, 2005 I don't have that problem, my brother is a GREAT web designer, and our clients are very happy with their sites. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
PhreeZone 20 #29 January 3, 2005 Yeah, I know a graphics artist/professional webdesigner that is more then willing to help me out. At his billing rate. Too bad his rate would probally cost me about the cost of a rig for a personal site that no more then 50 hits in a month are ever expected to hit it. I can buy the templete I am looking at for his rate for 1 hour. Now that I understand the PSD files more and played a bit into ImageReady I'm understanding the whole purpose of them. Honestly the thing that I am most looking into buying this for is the artwork and the graphics. I write DB apps among other things at work, coding is'nt an issue... its the making it look really pretty that is causing me to pull my hair out. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Nightingale 0 #30 January 3, 2005 Personally, I use the web templates that come with Xara Webstyle. They easily let you design title graphics, navbars and menus, as well as bar graphics and other stuff. The images are extremely customizeable, and very intiutive. Cheap too, compared to other programs. www.xara.com You can download a free version to experiment. I then use IBM TopPage to set up the layout. Top page is really nice because you can use the WYSIWYG screen to see what things will look like, place items and put in tables and forms, and then toggle to the html screen and paste in javascript or code. I mostly use the HTML screen, but I think most users use the WYSIWYG screen. It's versatility makes it very useful.
mailin 0 #31 January 3, 2005 QuoteTake all recommendations in stride. Jen uses plain old Javascript as an 'authentication' scheme. Guess she hasn't learned that if you disable javascript you can get to the pages and that search engines do not parse javascript. Attached is a pic from one of her sites that was supposedly password protected. Wow. Thats a bit low huh Jan? Don't you think if I was really worried about password protection - I would have written something that was? Obviously the whole 'time is money' thing doesn't take effect with you? Wow - I'm really surprised you decided to do this rather than approach me about it directly. Never mind the fact that I just finished a 17 credit hour semester on December 23rd, started a paid internship as a software developer and started this site on December 17th. No, I'm not busy - of course the site a piece of shit cause I don't know what I'm doing. And of course, I don't know anything about templates - and my recommendation of template monster is totally without merit. And no, for your information, our new site is not a template. blazetailman 0 #32 January 4, 2005 Ok, Stop. Everyone step back and take a deep breath. Phreezone was lookin for some info about webdesign/building for himself, not a client and it was turned into a pissing match technologies, "hand coders rule" or"my graphics are better" Let me put it into words every should be able to understand. Building a website is like skydiving. You have freefliers, RW, Crew, Style, Accuracy, birdmen, weekend jumpers, tandem students, coaches, compeitors, etc. Not one is right or wrong. Being a multi-media guy myself for around 10 years, my sites usually have a lot of pictures. Due to the fact I started the biz in photography and photojournalism. A programer who does a site while probably have a database, some javascript thing dancing, and a graphic designer will most likely have miniamal us of text, good use of negatices space and small text. Which is better? What ever the audience thinks. I think the best are ones with all the combined elements. Just like, I'm a skydiver not a RW or freeflier. I have worked hard to improve my skills at all discplines. Because everyone with a computer thinks they can build a site, doesn't mean they are capable. Phree sounded liked he wanted a few questions about templates. Lets try to get him back to the topic at hand because I would like to see what he wants to put up. So If I can chime in. I would recommend dreamweaver?? don't need the latest, but is nice Photoshop?? don't need the latest, but is nice and maybe a good book on webdesign from borders..I some times use that place like a library, they even serve coffee. public librarys don't. penniless 0 #33 January 4, 2005 Quote Attached is a pic from one of her sites that was supposedly password protected. attachment deleted by Skymama...Just because you have a skill doesn't mean you need to use it in order to put someone else down. Well, ASSUMING someone's motives is always liable to error. I for one would have been interested to see what the issue was with this code. My ASSUMPTION is that Jan put it there for good reason, to illustrate her point. Of course, I'm not green, so what do I know?
Avion 0 #34 January 4, 2005 Getting back to topic, all of the prefab templates I have seen just fail to impress me enough to use them. So, I stopped looking for 'em.
blazetailman 0 #35 January 4, 2005 I've seen a few and I would have to say your right. I don't have a need for it, but they might be a step up for Phree.www.canopyflightcenter.com www.skydivesac.com www.guanofreefly.com
Avion 0 #36 January 4, 2005 Those are a couple of sharp sites Hey Phree, have a look at: http://www.freewebtemplates.com Some of the flash sites are kinda neat. You will still have to do signifiance customization. Apparently, there are many more avaible, just google for 'free website templates.' Here's a link for a $69 skydiving template: http://www.finerdesign.com/sport_website_templates.htm It's file# 5078, you have to go a few pages in to find it. Gee, you've got me doing your homework for you
