skybytch 273 #26 January 4, 2005 So I gave up on getting rid of the evil thing that had infected Mom's puter... tonight I wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled Windows ME (yeah, I know, but I'm not sure my copy of XP will work on her machine...). After getting the DSL back up, I updated Windows, dl'ed and installed SpySweeper, Spybot SD, AdAware SE and the Google popup blocker/toolbar. Ran scans with the three spyware programs - within 30 minutes of the machine being online - and they found stuff! Unreal. Anyone know what Wild Tangent, Alexa and/or DSO Exploit are? Wild Tangent is a driver for online games, Alexa is a toolbar/seach tool, and DSO exploit is malware - they're all bad things due to being malware/spyware. I'd also recommend putting some sort of firewall software on the machine, if you haven't already. ZoneAlarm and Norton firewall are both good. Changing from IE to Mozilla or Fireberd will help a lot with that kind of stuff too. Good luck!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. I've gone to cleaning literally a dozen programs off every week to only one or two getting on every other week or so. You know whats sad? My dad wigged out about spyware and viruses recently and has so much stuff running to help protect his system that its lagging things down as if he was loaded with spywear. He won't take my advice on it though...--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

I get very few alerts on the adaware or the spybot programs since going to firefox.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
