kansasskydiver 0 #1 December 24, 2004 KangaGT (close friend and dz.comer) lost everything early this morning when his house burnt down. No one was injured in the fire though he is homeless and rigless Christmas Eve. The Red Cross has donated some money to help him buy clothes etc. I've set up a paypal account if anyone would like to donate to it to help him get back on his feet. He did not have insurance to my knowledge donate2travis@sbcglobal.net Blue skies and a merry christmas Chris<--- See look, pink dolphins DO exist! skycat 0 #6 December 24, 2004 About 5 years ago I when I 1st got renters insurance I didn't think I had anything worth insuring, but a rash of break ins in the area made me decide to get it anyway. After spending 2 days cataloging what everything in my house was worth it was something like $30,000. Imagine having to replace all your clothes, dishes, pots, pans, computer, bike, furniture, and such. Now every year I take a day and do a walk through of my house to add anything I have bought, upgraded, or received in the last year and having my insurance adjusted accordingly. Renters insurance is cheap, I pay something like $15 per month and pretty much everything in my house is covered.Fly it like you stole it!
weegegirl 2 #7 December 24, 2004 Shit. That is a real bummer. I'm very sorry to hear that. Does he have family that he can stay with or that can help him out??? Was he living alone? I'll take your word for it and kick down a few bucks to the paypal account. Tell Travis he's in my prayers and I hope he recovers mentally and financially from the fire. I'm glad nobody was hurt. kansasskydiver 0 #8 December 24, 2004 When I first moved into an Apt and out of the dorms I went to get renteres insurance. They gave it to me and then about a week later called and said they had to cancel it because I was high risk. My car had been broken into 2 times in the previous year. One resulting in 300+ CD's being stolen. Although they never paid a penny on the CD's, I had been flagged and for whatever reason was not able to get renters insurance. They said I'd have to wait 2 years and just havne't gone back in since. It's been about 3 years now<--- See look, pink dolphins DO exist!

It's been about 3 years now Sometimes just the area that a person lives in can make renters insurance unavailable/to expensive due to a high crime rate/#claims in the area. You could try another insurance company or if you've moved that might also help in addition to being a little older From the pictures it looks like it took the fire dept a long time to get out there. Any guesses what caused the fire? Winter, faulty heating system or electical. Don't know the law but if the fire was caused by a defect in the home the owner may be liable and have the insurance to cover the renters losses. The pic of the rig is interesting reserve pilot chute spring, harness harware, just pieces of metal. Good news no one got hurt, If your not insured yet get some tomorow. You could be next. R.I.P. WFFC 1 #12 December 30, 2004 QuoteIf your not insured yet get some tomorow. You could be next. R.I.P. Hopefully we all learned from the DZ fires/hurricanes this past year? Renters insurance isn't much. Just make sure to catalog everything and make sure you have enough to cover your loss. Also, make sure that your skydiving gear is covered - you may have to buy an additional rider to cover it.----- ~~~Michael

kansasskydiver 0 #14 December 30, 2004 QuoteI feel for the jumper but that's what I pay insurance for as should he! Again, some people don't have that option... Like me for example. I looked into it today and I can't get it still because of my previous happenings. Hopefully you don't find yourself shit outta luck someday soon I guess. I know you guys don't know him, but at the same time, neither did the Red Cross and others on DZ.com and the people in his city. I am too sorry he didn't have insurance, leason learned? Yes, but that still doesn't take back the fact that shit happens. The fire was caused by a backup in the wood burning stove used to keep the house warm in the winters<--- See look, pink dolphins DO exist!
PhillyKev 0 #15 December 30, 2004 QuoteI looked into it today and I can't get it still because of my previous happenings. Yes you can, it's called assigned risk insurance. If mainstream companies refuse to cover you, you go through assigned risk, managed by your state. They HAVE to insure you, but it will be at max rates. For renters insurance, that's still pretty damn cheap. A few hundred a year. I lived in a place with knob and tube wiring. No insurance companies would cover me. But I got coverage through assigned risk.
flyangel2 2 #16 December 30, 2004 I see the problem as some one that is too lazy to dig further to find out what they can do to be covered. I'm sorry that the guy lost all his stuff and that he didn't have insurance. I really am, but on the other hand, maybe some people will listen and get insurance. IMO, if you can afford to jump, you can afford to insure your gear. That includes some kind of medical insurance too. It's called being responsible. Please don't think of me as heartless, I really do feel for the guy losing everything, but I get so tired of hearing when someone gets hurt or something happens to a skydiver's gear, and they didn't take the time or energy to get insurance. I even respect someone's decision not to insure themselves and their belongings. But what I find irresponsible ceases to be relevant when someone has been devastated by their rotten luck. Peace~ linz Peas! linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It's simple, I didn't expect everyone to donate, but some people knew him or know myself and given the situation I made it open to others to help. I'm sure you feel the same about all the people in Asia who didn't have insurance right? flyangel2 2 #22 December 30, 2004 From what I understand happened the DZO had some insurance, but not enough to cover all the cost. Also from what I understand, most of the jumpers that lost their gear didn't have insurance. Ed and Karen where some friends of mine that I know that lost their gear. I told them, shame on you for not having insurance. Did I send them money for new gear? NO! I did send them a Gift Card for a grocery store, so they could save some money to buy new gear. But I'm glad you brought up Elsinore, you would think that people would have learned from that experience.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. Lindsey 0 #23 December 30, 2004 Dude! It's just my opinion. I usually DO give money when people need it, and I'll probably do so this time. I'm not all that cold really. I've made irresponsible choices once or twice in my life too....imagine that. I am grateful to people who have helped me out at tough times that were brought on by nothing more than my own bad decisions. Just because I believe a person has made irresponsible choices does not mean that I believe nobody should help him out.... Peace~ linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. PhillyKev 0 #24 December 30, 2004 QuoteI'm sure you feel the same about all the people in Asia who didn't have insurance right? I'm not saying this guy doens't deserve a hand, but that comment is whack! Hundreds of thousands dead, bodies piled in the streets, No food, clothing, or water, pending massive epidemic. Those people are currently at risk of dying due to the conditions they are in. Insurance doesn't cover that. It would have covered your friend. And I certainly hope he's not facing that same level of gut wrenching hardship as a result of his misfortune.

If you can afford to skydive, you can afford insurance. The last time I looked most of those people in Asia don't skydive. Hell, most of them didn't even own a home.
