How do you define "in love"?

I agree that most true love must be mutual (especially romantic love since that involves such a level of intimacy.) However, not all love is mutual. The day my nephews were born, I loved them instantly. They weren't capable of love, so it went unreciprocated. I got nothing in return of loving them. I'm speaking in a romantic sense. I love my new shoes, but I don't think it'll work out...

Edit: There is a difference with love and being in love, and it's the romantic context. This is more than the physical aspect, it's very mental. And yes, as I said, someone can love someone and can be in love with someone but if it's not mutual then that person is kidding themself. I'm kind of on the line as far as contradicting myself in my statement about being self-absorbed but you have to love yourself first. Then, how can you be in love someone who does not love you?

I figured as such, but it is possible to love someone even if you're not in love. Even when a person "falls out of love," they can still love the person they were with....even when that other person is still in love.

Going back a few posts with the comparison of love and chocolate. Hugh Grant comes into the picture with all of those stupid sappy love movies he's done. He's at the top of my "People to Kick in the Nuts" list just for Notting Hill.
