How do you define "in love"?

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered this . . . in order to be in love, does the other person have to reciprocate? Or can one person be in love with another who doesn't feel the same? It seems silly to say "I'm in love . . ." when you're still alone.

Thoughts? Or is this too deep for the day-after-the-day-after Christmas?

Oh, it's not everlasting . . . he doesn't believe in marriage. :P But I'll settle for "love of the week", as opposed to "love of his life". :D:D:D

Oh...good. In that case, how does the 2nd week of Feb work for you? I have that one free.;)

I think being "in love" is an irrational biochemical reaction a person can feel about another person. It's probably linked to the urge & necessity to reproduce, every nerve and fiber says you want to make a baby with this one. It makes people go nuts, feel sick to their stomachs, fell like their skin is on fire. Not much else seems important anymore and it's easy to behave like a fool in front of a lot of shocked friends or family.

That's not so far fetched if you consider how little any of us know about a new partner. The fun part is when it's reciprocated, the two get to know more about each other, and the biochem fireworks are still going off like the 4th of July. Some people learn how to keep it going for many years. By then you hopefully know each other well enough to find some deeper roots with each other as well.

"In love" speaks of your state of mind, and not that of the other person. I've been in love with probably a half dozen women in my life. Probably roughly the same number have been in love with me. They have intersected twice.

No, it is not. Saying, "We're in love with each other" when you are alone is silly.

Does the second week of February happen to coincide with Valentine's Day? If so, you just might have yourself a deal. ;)

I think you've all made valid points, particularly tbrown with your biochemical remarks. ;) And lawrocket hit on exactly what I was talking about. The only question I have for him is, how did you know that those four (or however many) women you weren't in love with were in love with you? That would be a wonderful thing to know-- that someone thought you were that amazing. :)

As a matter of fact, it does. Wow, what a coincidence. >:(

Love is so funny. There are so many different kinds, but romantic love seems to be the most tricky since the standard is to have only one at a time.

I define being in love as putting someone before you. Being in love means you actually strive to be better because of that other person. It also means that you want to get to know as much as you can about them because they are one of the most interesting people you know. It's the feeling that you want to spend every minute with that person but don't need to. It's the feeling where everything is "better" if they are there.

Love is the one thing where we can't always define it by the way neurons fire. If it was simply due to reproduction, then I'm sure I would've fallen in love with the men who ran 10 miles a day and made twice as much as me. They could provide!!!

Are you saying that you don't believe it's possible that with time, patience and understanding that the love can be reciprocated?

I like to believe anything is possible.

Of course, I believe in Santa Claus, too!

Yeah...loving someone is a nice thing and unconditional. Being "in love" usually means you expect something from them, whether it's a return of affection, fidelity, or a specific amount of time spent with you.

Loving someone is selfless. Being in love is selfish.

At least that's my warped view of the matter.

I always said that I loved my ex-boyfriend, but I was never "in love" with him. Now I can't remember exactly why I said that. I don't remember how I felt at the time.

Edited to add..... Yay I was selfless! I guess that might have been why or maybe the fact that I never had the goofy kind of love for him.
I'm so funny I crack my head open!
