More consumers give new cars as gifts - and get lots of kisses

Christmas cars may seem an extravagant way to check someone off your gift list, but each season brings a new group of generous givers and lucky recipients. This year, the trend is buoyed by unprecedented luxury car deals geared to the holidays. No surprise there: While there are no data on how many are gifts, December was the biggest sales month for luxury cars in three of the last six years, Autodata says.

Anyone feeling a twinge of envy should know that for every pricey car that goes to the woman or man who has everything, at least one goes to someone who is truly surprised, not to mention deserving.

Saturday morning, Xenia Potter's surprise Christmas and 20th anniversary gift will be a red Jaguar X-type with a green bow. That Xenia had to drive her car-buff husband's automotive hand-me-downs for the past 15 years is the least of it. She's been battling health problems and spent decades doing medical research on organ transplants and diabetes for her son, who has had three transplants and is now diabetes-free.

Husband Norm Potter, who owns an infomercial sales company, was working the payments for the $35,000 car into his budget the other day. He says it's more than worth it.

"You know what? She deserves this. She's a stunningly beautiful woman who is twice as pretty on the inside," says Potter, who hopes Xenia's friends won't spoil his surprise.

Sure, much of the luxury-car gift giving is based on desires, not needs. A Texas doctor had a restaurant valet parking attendant surprise his wife earlier this month with a $128,000 performance version of the Mercedes-Benz SL sports car. Her combined birthday and Christmas present was more than twice as expensive as her previous car, the high-performance $55,000 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster.

Michael Jones, a Fort Lauderdale criminal defense lawyer, is surprising his very pregnant wife, Regina, with a $50,000 Lexus GX 470 sport-utility vehicle. The couple, who have a 14-month-old daughter, are expecting twins and could use something bigger than their 1998 Nissan Pathfinder.

Jones says his wife is not the type who would ever ask for or expect a luxury car, even though he drives a $90,000 Acura NSX sports car.

"She's so undemanding and selfless that I really wanted to get her something special for Christmas," says Jones. "I'll be redeemed in a week with all my neighbors."

My boss got his wife a Bentley. It's really really nice. He let me drive it slow on the driveway.
