SkyDiveDoc22 0 #1 July 25, 2009 Happy Satuday everyone. Well, I’m at 20 jumps now and am getting closer and closer to my A-License. I have begun the religious viewing of the Dropzone classifieds. I’m 5’11 and about 177lbs. I am currently jumping a 200 and I stand it up every time. I know the best thing to do is to find a 190. But as most of you know, those are up one day and sold the next. Just wondering if you guys think I could go a bit smaller than a 190. And of course, I understand safety is the first concern. Thanks guys!"Id rather shoot for the stars and miss, than aim for the gutter and make it." ~Danny Trejo
mnealtx 0 #2 July 25, 2009 QuoteI know the best thing to do is to find a 190. Actually, according to Brian Germain's downsizing recommendations, you should be under a 230 for at least your first 60 jumps - that presumes that your EXIT weight (not your bodyweight) is less than 200 lbs. If it's above, then you should be staying at a 230 for the first 100 jumps. You REALLY need to be talking to your instructors about this whole issue. Don't be in such a hurry to downsize. Learn to wring every bit of performance out of your canopy before changing sizes. Billvon's downsizing checklist is a good start. When you can perform all those maneuvers safely and consistently, THEN start looking at downsizing a step (230 to 210). QuoteJust wondering if you guys think I could go a bit smaller than a 190. Absolutely not. See above. QuoteAnd of course, I understand safety is the first concern. Thanks guys! No, it's not - 'getting small' is your first concern, as evidenced by your post. Again, see above.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
SkyDiveDoc22 0 #3 July 25, 2009 Well, thanks for the scolding. You motivated me to never post in the forums again. Im not your son. A simple "no, try this and blue skies" would suffice. And as evidence by your post, I know exactly the kind of person you are. Thanks for the advice, but lighten up."Id rather shoot for the stars and miss, than aim for the gutter and make it." ~Danny Trejo
Chubba 0 #4 July 25, 2009 Relax SkyDiveDoc22 If your instructors have put you on a 200 and you're displaying good canopy control, ask them if a 190 is appropiate for your first canopy. Most important thing to do once you get your A is to demo a good portion of the modern designs, you might need to upside back to 210 initially but provided you have good canopy control, a few more jumps under your belt and your instructors give you the nod, a 190 will probably serve you well. At your weight, a 170 is too small.
Parafoil27 0 #5 July 25, 2009 LOL seems as though DZ.com is real un-popular to the new guys these days This is the second time i'v seen "I'll never post here again" in two days. I'v met many that refuse to even go on the site because of "What i'v heard" . Just an observation EARTH! Short bus of the universe, since the year T+10.3 billion! REV. I could have told you to do a search, as there have been hundreds (if not thousands) of threads exactly like yours posted. Instead, I gave you links to a canopy designer and canopy class instructor, as well as a multi-discipline competitor - both with over 10000 jumps. In response, you whine that I didn't blow sunshine and rainbows up your ass, and that I was 'scolding' you - if you thought that was a scold, you've led a very, VERY sheltered life. IMO you would be hard pressed convincing someone that's standing up landings under a 200 to buy a 230 as their first canopy.
