Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar

just wondering but how many people have really heard the Thin Lizzy version to compare it to.... not that Lizzy was the first to do it as it a traditional but....

i'll always prefer Phil Lynot to Hetfeild any day...

there are a couple of recording of Thin Lizzy doing it... both electric and acoustic versions... iirc it is a 'traditional' tavern song... Thin Lizzy remade it and made it popular in their heyday... i'm sure there are various other version pre-Lizzy, but i'm not familar with them... the Peel Sessions disk has one of the 'acoustic versions'.

actually more americans should rediscover Thin Lizzy... and the classic rock stations should play more than 'boys are back' and 'jailbreak'..

Check out 'Black Rose', 'Renegade'' and 'Thunder and Lightning'... but 'Live and Dangerous' or the 'Dedication' disk are really good places to start for an overview..

Thats on the Blow in the Wind Albumn along with I only want to be with You and Wild World.

Bet you don't have the Import Albumns like "Turn Japanese" or all their singles...;) I'm starting to work on getting them all. They just put out a new one in the last 2 months. Not bad at all...

so the question then... who has 'reinvented' a song in a way that made it more meaningful for you personally?

Gary Jules' cover of Mad World (originally Tears for Fears)

It became a sleeper hit with the help of its appearance on the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

Very haunting and beautiful.

1. Tori Amos-Angie
2. I like the remake of "Boys of Summer"-can't remember who does it
3. Some Ska band did a remake of John Denver's "Almost Heaven, West Virginia" that was very cool! We ought to adopt that as our state song.

Frank Zappa's cover of Johnny Cash's "ring of fire" best intro ever

Me & Bobby McGee by: Kris Kristofferson and reinvented by Janis Joplin and how many others?
The first tune I wanted to learn how to play on the guitar.

She wrote him a letter telling him that "this is how it should be sung," Kris Kristofferson didn't know Janis had recorded it until after her death. Talk about singing a tune- the way it should be.....
:P:P

SMiles;)
