PhreeZone 20 #3 December 11, 2004 Transplant? Are you talking about replacing the entire board assembly with another from a different drive? Good luck in that. Those connections are more sensitive then most humans can soder.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
lemonjelly 0 #4 December 11, 2004 yup, whip the board from another EXACLY the same. It's only got 4 push on contacts. Data recovery is WAY too expensive, they're talking £000's There's gotta be one out there somewhere, I'm sure************************************************* RED LIGHTS & OFF LANDINGS ARE JUST MY THANG http://www.redlightrob.co.uk

flyingferret 0 #7 December 11, 2004 Just ebay one cheap...heck you can buy another drive a lot cheaper than doing data recov. Not sure on Quantums, but the WDs, just have these little jelly conductive things between the board and the drive, replacing is a snap.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. Kris 0 #8 December 11, 2004 Another thing to keep in mind....it may not work. You've got two things going against you: 1. The firmware level needs to be the same. 2. The drive may be unreadable due to natural defects. When drive platters are made, they all have defects on them. Making a platter without defects just isn't feasibly possible. So when the drive is spun up for the first time in the factory, all the defects are mapped and loaded into a table in ROM memory on the drive board. If that board you're trying to put on your old drive has a fair number of defects on it, on the same tracks/sectors as where your data actually is, be prepared to say g'bye to it. And now ya' know, backups are the way to go. I've been caught without one recently and now have a dual-layer DVD burner sitting in my computer. Good luck from this ex-Seagate monkey.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
