HELPING A SOLDIER

Recommended Posts

the downside is that if the package is mailed to 'any soldier', it may never get there as real packages with names take priority. There was something on 20/20 or similar a few weeks ago.

I am willing to take a chance!

I hear yah, but it's worth a shot. And you aren't just sending it to "Any Soldier". You are sending it to a contact over there that then distributes the packages. Who knows. But it'll only cost about 2 jumps and could make somebody's holiday. My vote: worth it.

Actually, you CANNOT send anything addressed to "any soldier" anymore. It won't go anywhere. It has to be addressed to a specific person, that's why these kinds of sites were set up. I tried to send a care package to "any soldier" and it was returned to me.

Even if the address has a contact, like:

SSG John Doe
ATTN: Any Soldier
HHC 1/503 INF
etc etc

I mean, if that's the case, I will just take out the "ATTN" part and the contact guy should know what to do with it.

Check out the home page of this site. www.romad.com Charlie is organizing to send stuff to the guys in theater. Just shoot him an email to charlie@romad.com with "XMAS FOR THE BOYS" in the subject line. He'll tell ya what you need to do. Make a ROMAD happy this Christmas. ;) Oh yeah....hit the "enter" button below the pic and scroll down on the next page. One other edit.........also check out this page. www.romad.com/finaljumper/faley.htm. I'm trying to find out if the memorial account is still open. I called the Ft Campbell credit union but they seemed to be clueless. I have an email in to Charlie....hopefully he can find something out for me. I want to send Andrew and Shannon a few bucks extra for Christmas.

My girls and I just sent several packages over there a few weeks ago. We even filled a box with a small Christmas tree and ornaments so the soldier could have a little holiday cheer. We did have a name of an exact soldier though so I hope he gets it. We also sent a letter and picture of us just to make it more personal.

Just read the page....you send to people who distribute. All the ATTN line does is label it for the contact.

Come on Kev, RTFM ;)

Right....I meant you can't just send it addressed to any soldier without a contact. If you send it to an individual soldier specifying you want them to distribute it, that's fine.

I'm really excited about doing this. Christmas is about doing things from the heart and as anyone knows that does volunteer work and anything like that, the feeling you get is better than any gift bought commercially.

Happy Holidays to all

As a soldier who has received a few of those packages I am happy to say we do get them, although they do end up being abit after there intended delivery because the named packages are first priority as you said.

I found that cards for me meant more. I tended to answer as many as I could and eve nmake avisit whe npossible upon getting home.

It looks like if you read here, there is a list of names.

I'd be nice if that list came with pictures and info on if they were sinlge or not ....

Edited to add: Not that I was going to, but why can't you send "horror comics"?

Edited a second time to add: When over in Iraq, the soldiers never get to have bacon or sausage for breakfast, do they?

My little brother is overthere for about a year now. He and others in his company get packages all the time from people they never met. It really goes a long way. There are some soldiers whos families cannot afford to send care packages. I dont know about sending them to any soldier. I thnk those are now rejected.

I attached a pic of my brother with some packages he revieved. Disregard the brotherly sign of affection...lol

I agree...Here's an idea to make sure it gets there...Call your local reserve office if you know they're deployed. Get a name and address of someone in the group. If you want a name and address, my girlfriends brother is currently calling Camp Anaconda home. I can get some names from him if you like.

Packages are taking a minimum of 2 weeks to reach them, even sent priority.

Sending priority will only expedite it a day or so. It's only expedited to the east coast, from there it's in the military postal system from what the post office has told me here a few times.
Also, make sure the post office puts a rubber stamp on the outside of the package (not sure what it says, but the postal clerk should know). It expedites the delivery on a space available basis. e.g. it will go priority, space available.
