Hope you got at least a got severance........

Yeah, they're paying me my salary for 30 more days, then giving me a week's pay for each year of service.

It was actually kinda nice not having to get up and go anywhere today, but if I haven't found something within a month, I'll start to worry. It figures that I've finally got the time to get some stuff done around the house, but not the money to do those things. :S

Sorry to hear that- a lot of us at my co. are facing the same thing. Worst part is how slow they are about it- we've known for well over a month now, and it's just dragging on, killing morale...

I'm pretty ambivalent about being let go. Yeah, I'd rather have a job and a paycheck, but it could be the kick in the ass I need to find what it is I'm meant to do- this sure as hell isn't it.

Was your job your 'calling'? If so, you're probably very good at it (or at least enthusiastic), and will have no problems finding another employer.

If not, hey, go do something that makes you happy. This could be a blessing in disguise...

Think about it...

What do you do? Maybe some dz.comer from around your area can help. Sorry to hear about it. I got laid off last November and didn't get a new job until last month (mostly cuz I spent all my time jumping off my unemployment money instead of looking for a new job). Oh, well. Have fun while you're free!!!!

Company loyalty is zero because it is a 2-way street.

I believe that this problem is the reason for 401-K plans, because there is no expectation of being around 7 years to be vested in a pension plan.

After my last contract, the employees said that I should roll in for job security. 30 days later, the project was outsourced to IBM and all the employees let go.

As President and Founder of the U.S.A (Unemployed Skydivers of America) I welcome you to the ranks...I know...it sucks. [:/]

Ivan, are you STILL a member ?? What's it been, like 6 months now ? Longer ??

Ya'know, I wouldn't mind working at Starbucks - it beats unemployment rates, plus you get bennies and FREE coffee !

Close to 3 months, but, sometimes if I go to Starbucks or places like that they say No thanks, or You are OVERQUALIFIED, which is not bad, but still...it sucks.

I'm waiting for some calls, hopefully something will happen soon.

Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear that. I know what you are going through. It happened to me last December and as a result, I know have to drive from Kirkland to Tacoma every day. Now that Sucks! Come on over to the west side and look for a job.

What do you do anyway?

I do environmental stuff. Most of my experience is in the compliance realm, especially related to hazardous waste and PCBs, but I can also do environmental site assessments and have a fair grasp of remedial laws, processes, and technology. Right now I'm actually kind of stoked about this whole thing. I had an informal interview yesterday that went pretty well and reached the point of "we might be able to talk salary and introduce you around the office sometime late next week". I think there's a very good chance that I'll be able to find a new job before I'm even "officially" off the payroll, in which case the severance package will just be like a bonus check, not to mention the very real possibility that I'll be making more money and doing more challenging work. All in all, I think this will turn out to be for the best. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth given the loyalty I showed my employer, but what the hell...lesson learned.

We just built a new house last year, so moving to the west side isn't at the top of my list of options. Hey, by pure coincidence, Lora came into town on Wednesday (the day I got laid off), so she had the distinct pleasure of accompanying me through 8 bottles of very good wine. I'm glad I wasn't the one who had to be at work the next morning! ;)

Eight bottles of wine. DUDE!!!!

I know what you mean about the house. Richard and I just bought a house in Kirkland. Wish I could say it was new. It was built in 1956 but you know how expensive houses are over here. I love it though. We could have bought twice the house for the same amount of money if we wanted to go out 15 - 20 miles to the east but my commute is hellish enough as it is.

LOL - yeah, you did. It's been nice not having to get up early the last two mornings. If I'm still not having to get up early in a few weeks, I'll start to worry, but right now I'm trying to be optimistic about it (and of course trying to plan a perfectly poignant response to the company who got my last 10 years). Conniving is fun! B|:P
