mountainman 0 #1 November 30, 2004 what kind of headsets do you fly with? I bought a Denali ANR headset and am not completely satisfied with it. I can't decide if I want to keep with the ANR theme or just go with a DC or the like. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks.http://www.brandonandlaura.com
CieloDiosa 0 #2 November 30, 2004 ive got the david clark H10-20s they are sweet i love them pretty standard i think i used to have red barons, not cool barely worked but cheap the lightspeeds are amazing... my instructor let me fly his one time.. at least i think they were lightspeeds?? they have all these little controls, pretty high tech ~boogie ho!! pull before impact! pilotdave 0 #3 November 30, 2004 DC H10-13.4. Course I bought mine in 1995 or 96... there might be better ones around now. But it works fine, it's reasonably comfortable, etc. No complaints, no problems. Never tried an ANR to compare it though. I mostly chose that one cause it was about the lightest headset available at the time. The gel filled ear seals are comfy, but do get kinda sweaty on long (or interesting) flights. I know they make cotton (or something) covers for em to wick away the sweat. But it's been a long time since I've looked at headsets so they might be totally different now. CieloDiosa 0 #4 November 30, 2004 why dont you like the denali??? they are so expensive they must be worth something ~boogie ho!! pull before impact! L.A.S.T#14, PMS #309, Ci EL O DI O SA
larsrulz 0 #5 November 30, 2004 I use a DC ANR headset and love it. I have flown with my former instructor's Bose X a number of times, and I honestly couldn't feel any difference in comfort, and the ANR feature of my H10-13 is excellent! Edited to note that it is obviously the 13X as opposed to the non-ANR 13.4. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
mountainman 0 #7 November 30, 2004 Thanks for the info, guys! The Denali is OK, but the ANR is just not too consistant. When I tip my head down to look at instruments or charts, the ANR really works great, but when I look back up, it isn't nearly as good. Not sure about that. I'm thinking the seal around my ears, but I can't adjust it any better. I was thinking going with DC headsets just cause everyone seems to have them, so they must be decent. I was thinking of some flavor of the 13 oz. jobs. They look nice. Also, the Denali ANR headsets are pretty much ALL plastic. They won't take any abuse, I don't think. Not good in the cramped Cessnas. Thanks again and more comments/thoughts are greatly appreciated!http://www.brandonandlaura.com
DanDruff 0 #8 November 30, 2004 I have one of these. There custsom molded ear peices with the mic actually in the ear peice. So you actually talk though your ear. They work really well and are as quite as almost any ANR head set. http://www.pantherelectronics.com/

Jib 0 #11 November 30, 2004 I have Pilot Avionics ANR (burgundy color). It was the middle one at the time. Half the time, I would forget to turn them on but I could hear a difference. I liked them, but they did not seal very well around my sunglasses; if I were current, I'd probably try gels. Also, Lightspeeds did not play nice with them; I flew for an hour and couldn't hear anything the guy next to me said. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. mountainman 0 #12 November 30, 2004 I just called and got an RA # for returning the Denali ANRs, but am having them send me some DC H10-13.4 headsets in replacement. I have used the DCs and they are just some rock solid headsets.http://www.brandonandlaura.com
larsrulz 0 #13 November 30, 2004 Although I would recommend a pair of the ANR DC's...good choice. The 13.4's are a nice heatset! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
velvetjo 0 #14 November 30, 2004 I've got Lightspeed 20XL's, and my wife has Lightspeed Twenty3g's. Both are great, and the 3g's are cool because of the cell phone/music input jack with muting. I steal them from her when she's not looking. Lightspeed has great customer service. Only one minor problem with my headset so far, a sticky switch on the battery box, and they shipped the part to me overnight at no charge - after they were out of warranty. dtpilot 0 #15 November 30, 2004 I fly with a marv golden anr but always forget the battery pack. I like the anr and want to stay with it forever. DC are really nice to and they make a nice anr. The best out there is the bose but if you dont have a grand just sitting around your probably going to be disappointed. "Believe me! mountainman 0 #16 November 30, 2004 Thanks for the info, guys! I figure that for $277 each, the 13.4 will be good for now. If/when I start flying a lot more, I'll probably replace them with some ANR headsets and move those to the backseats. I would LOVE the Bose headsets, but like you said, you need $1000 laying around. LOL I'm looking forward to getting them. I hear customer support is great for them (like most headsets). I hear of Lightspeeds breaking a lot (on a Mooney maillist), which would be good to have a great customer support system. As far as the music inputs, my Sigtronics intercom has that input feature too. I'm looking forward to using it! SkydiveJack 1 #18 December 1, 2004 Quotewhat kind of headsets do you fly with? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks. I used to have a Telex ANR and it was always such a pain in the ass. Buying batteries got expensive(I fly a bunch of different airplanes at work so no, I couldn't just get an adapter to plug into a power source). I ended getting a good Dave Clark head set. I also got a small Telex with a boom mike and an ear plug that I clip on my glasses. I use it when flying passengers. They work for me but you really just need to find what works best for you. pilotdave 0 #19 December 1, 2004 I thought it was funny to see that -13.4s actually weight something like 14.6oz (cant remember the exact number now) with the gel ear seals. If you wanna lose that ounce you gotta put on the foam ear seals that are included too. And yeah, I've heard their support is excellent, especially if you go to the factory in person (in MA). I learned to fly not far from there. My instructor mentioned that he'd flown there with a problem and they fixed his headset, icluding replacing some parts, for free while he waited. And it was like 10 years old. Dave

My dad splurged for a noise-reduction headset, something like $300 or $400, and he swears by it. He's normally kinda cheap about stuff like that, so it's saying something. I don't know what brand he has, though. I have a Flightcomm headset that is not NR, but I like it okay. I had the upgrade to gel-filled earcups for a few extra bucks. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" mountainman 0 #23 December 1, 2004 I must admit that I could tell a pretty good difference between the ANR and passive, there were too many problems I found: - would get BAD feedback at times (deafening) - would sound different depending on my head position (probably a fit issue) - having to replace batteries and turn the headset ON - price tag of $550 (nothing compared to Bose) - Denali ANR is made of plastic - seperate volume knobs for each ear (why?) - mic didn't work on all intercoms with non-ANR headsets Oh well. Sending back today via UPS and the two 13.4's are en route.http://www.brandonandlaura.com
pilotdave 0 #24 December 1, 2004 Yeah when I bought my 13.4 I had the choice of regular or stereo, with 2 volume knobs. I never understood that. Dave
