JamesNahikian 0 #1 December 1, 2004 I'm planning a solo day hike in the Tucson area for this Sunday starting around daybreak. Finger Rock to Mt. Kimball sounds fine though I will be grateful for your informed recommendations. Mainly seeking vistas while avoiding crowds and dogs. Thx in advance. D. JohnRich 4 #2 December 1, 2004 Mt. Picacho, between Tucson and Eloy. Saguaro National Park. Catalina State Park. (Look for Indian pottery fragments) Anywhere on the Catalina Highway up the mountain on the north side of Tucson. Further afield, there is tons of neat stuff, like Indian dwellings, mountain lakes, dams, an underground nuclear missle silo museum, ancient Spanish missisons, etc.
headoverheels 333 #3 December 2, 2004 Not a hike, but the Desert Museum is good. Second John's Saguaro Monument recommendation. I haven't hiked it, but I have biked it.
flyinghonu 0 #4 December 2, 2004 Mt. Lemon, about 45 minute drive, was cool when I went to school there. I think much of it burned up during the fires a year or so ago. Nonetheless, breathtaking views from all sides and plenty of untouched (or at least it feels that way) area to wander...however, there are bears up there (I'm a little bit of scaredy cat when it comes to bears ). I second Catalina National Park. During the winter, you can hike up to several different pools that come down the rocks from the moutains...VERY cool (esp. with the right company ). If you are feeling extremely "free", there is an area in Sabino Canyon (northeast Tucson area) with great hiking trails and waterfalls. However, BE WARNED....hikers are allowed to (and WILL BE) bearing it all. Tucson is great in the winter...enjoy "Excuse me while I kiss the sky..." - Jimi Hendrix
