MC208B 0 #1 November 11, 2004 Help!!! My roommate here recently loaded spybot S&D on my puter, deleted a bunch of stuff and now, I can't burn CD's anymore My puter plays CD's (and all the other P&P stuff works), there is nothing at all in the device manager tho. Any ideas to fix this stuff would be greatly appreciated. PS, the system restore won't restore to a time prior to the spybot being installed.
Nightingale 0 #2 November 11, 2004 reinstall the software and drivers for your CD burner.
flyingferret 0 #3 November 11, 2004 Don't let your roommate touch it? But for now, how about just reload the software. Windows XP will burn with nothing more than burners for the driver. If you want burning software, reload the CD that came with the drive.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
MC208B 0 #4 November 11, 2004 I have reloaded the CD drive software and drivers, still inop. I can't figure out why the device manager is empty. I bought this puter at Comp USA 3 years ago (HP Pavilion 7935) and it came loaded with windows XP but came without the XP CD (salesman said that's the way it is, no XP CD!) so, I can't reload the OS. Help!!!
Paulipod 0 #5 November 11, 2004 If you dont have the OS CD... you could always download SP2 for XP from Microsoft.com Then... you get an up to date patch... and it does a refresh of files at the same time.... Just an idea. Bodyflight Bedford www.bodyflight.co.uk
tweak 0 #6 November 11, 2004 You don't need to reload the OS. I would uninstall and re-install the software you use to burn cd's and also if necessary the drivers for the cd drive. If you don't have a cd with the drivers, you can probably go to the manufacturers web site and download them free of charge. You said that the device manager box is empty... that's kind of scary. Do you mean completely empty, or your cd drive doesn't appear under "DVD/CD-ROM Drives"? If you can find your cd drive listed here, you can right click and select update driver to re-install the driver. If it doesn't appear then you can right click on just about any entry in the box and select "Scan for hardware changes" this may help. Also, whenever you buy a new system, insist of the seller giving you a cd for *all* of the software that comes pre-installed. Especially the OS. I've never heard of not getting an install disk for any software that's pre-installed, but apparently it happens. I'd probably call Comp USA and tell them you need that install disk. I don't know how many times I've installed a new piece of hardware and had to pop in the XP install disk. Hope this helps. -Trey
CrazyIvan 0 #7 November 11, 2004 Start the system in SAFE MODE, and check DEVICE MANAGER__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
Zee 0 #8 November 12, 2004 As opposed to reloading all the drivers and software and going through all that crap, try this: Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode and click on the Recovery button. From there you can undo any changes you're roomie did with Spybot. Just a thought, Z Action©Sports

tweak 0 #10 November 12, 2004 This may help you get your device mgr list back, basically you need to make sure the "Plug and Play" service didn't get turned off somehow and if it is still enabled you man need to turn it off and back on again and restart your computer.
