skymama 37 #1 November 8, 2004 Does anyone have any ideas what might have happened to my computer screen and if it is fixable? I left work on Friday and it was fine. I came back this morning and it looks like this. There have been some toddlers in the house who may have done something to it. All I can think is that a magnet or some kind of cleaning solution might have done something. The colors are on the screen; when I use the scroll bar, things that are one color, like the dz.com blue header, will turn different colors as I move the text behind it.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

BillyVance 34 #5 November 8, 2004 Most likely some kind of magnetic field did this. I know, because I was playing with a couple of magnets right in front of my computer (luckily it was my work computer, not home!) I noticed a weird color change moving around on my screen as I fiddled with the magnets. The colors magnified the closer I brought the magnets to the screen. At the time I was thinking "hey this is really cool!!" without realizing the permanent damage I was causing. Now, 8 months later, I still have a discolored patch in the upper right corner, but it doesn't hinder my work at all... Yours look way worse! Edited to add: Now I'm not saying the toddlers were playing with magnets or that a magnetic field of some kind did this damage to yours. I'm just presenting my experience. I don't know what else might do this. Kissing Simba has a magnet in it's nose so it can "kiss" Nala. Argh!!! So, now I have to get a new monitor. Is a flat screen worth the extra money on a work computer? I don't need to watch videos or anything like that on it, just mainly boring spreadsheets and accounting work. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
nacmacfeegle 0 #8 November 8, 2004 "All I can think is that a magnet or some kind of cleaning solution might have done something." Most monitors have some sort of menu for adjusting stuff like contrast brightness etc. Its quite likely that there is a 'De-gaussing' facility in the menu somewhere, try it, might work. This will clear any magnetic anomalies on the screen. It won't clear magic markers, highlighter pen marks, jelly stains or grubby fingerprints, nor will it enable crackers to be removed from CDrom or floppy drives, toast from VCR slots, sigh, kids are fun.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. TheAnvil 0 #9 November 8, 2004 Degauss the monitor. Then put my picture up as the wallpaper. That should fix the problem.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

Sometimes... not always... I degaussed my screen many times trying to clear the "stain" on my monitor, but it only worked to diminish it, not completely erase it. Every monitor is a bit different though. I tested the magnets on another screen then degaussed immediately afterwards, and it was cleaned off fully, no after effects left. mailin 0 #11 November 8, 2004 Ya, I was just gonna mention it had to be a magnet. Does taking the magnet off fix it? If not, you may need a new monitor. The flat screens are not very 'tough'. They're too easy to brake IMO. You can easily put a finger through it just by missing the power off button (I know, cause I've done it). nacmacfeegle 0 #12 November 8, 2004 Yeah, I hear you Billy, but it has to worth a dibble, certainly cheaper than a new monitor.BTW, magnets don't affect LCD screens, So Andi, if you are getting a new monitor, go flat girl.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. CSpenceFLY 1 #25 November 8, 2004 It's Karma for locking the RoamingDZ.com thread.Your monitor may not be ruined. There is a device used to adjust the color when building a multiple screen picture.A larger TV repair place might have one.I don't know what you call it.Someone who rents upper end AV equipment should have one.
