Nightingale 0 #1 November 8, 2004 I am so sick of seeing christmas/winter decorations the day after halloween, and even before halloween, when its still warm outside! don't get me wrong, I love the holidays, and I love looking at the decorations, but when they go up at halloween, it's a bit rediculous, and the novelty's worn off way before the christmas season. It's weird looking at christmas trees with fake snow when we should be seeing pumpkins and turkeys. This is just getting stupid. I'm hearing friends and family members and neighbors complain. Even my roommate's kid sister was moaning "christmas already! it's not even thanksgiving!" A friend made an offhand comment about wishing there was a law against it. I got to thinking...why not? If it's something the public wants, the lawmakers should deliver. So... I was thinking maybe a petition to deliver to the city council asking them to pass an ordinance banning winter holiday decorations until the day after thanksgiving. I was curious as to how many people would sign something like that. I've been hearing a lot of complaining about the decorations, but I'm not sure how many people would be willing to sign a petition to do something about it. so... Would you support an ordinance prohibiting winter holiday decorations in retail establishments until the day after thanksgiving?

jumpergirl 0 #3 November 8, 2004 Since the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year, I would say let them start a week before Thanksgiving, but no sooner than that. I would definitely sign something like that! I'm sick of seeing all of the decorations and stuff, too. It seems like it's earlier and earlier every year. Enough is enough. Nightingale 0 #4 November 8, 2004 well, it was definitely still warm here two weeks before halloween when I was seeing the first decorations go up. In most places, it doesn't feel like december 25th on october 10th, right?

Clownburner 0 #8 November 8, 2004 It's not so ridiculous. I wouldn't say it should be a complete prohibition, just on commercial properties, so if you REALLY wanna put up xmas lights in october you could, but you wouldn't have to suffer through THREE months of f'ing xmas carols on the damn PA system at every shopping center... NEWS FLASH: We're not all christians, and we don't all like xmas music. <> Uh, yeah, I'd sign up for that. 7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth

flyangel2 2 #10 November 8, 2004 I work in a retail store once a week, and the customers that want Christmas, and to get ready for it, love having trees and decorations out for them to buy. I'm not sure of the numbers, but I know that I hate having to listen to the music the day after Thanksgiving.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. diablopilot 2 #12 November 8, 2004 I too think the "Christmas in October" is anoying, however IMO trivial crap like this does not need to waste our legaslative processes. Maybe people should worry about their own lives a bit more instead of others. Why would you want to restrict someones ability to make a living through petty laws and policies, when there is a simpler way. Simply don't shop at the offending vendors.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
kai2k1 0 #13 November 8, 2004 /RANT ON I for one cannot stand to see Christmas decorations up before the day after thanksgiving. 2 years ago they had fake trees and the all the Christmas decorations up in a part of Dillards right after Labor Day. I'm sooo sick of Christmas i could scream!! What ever happened to just spending time with your family, having a good dinner?? Christmas has become sooo commercialized that any year now i'm expecting to see sponsorships up in that catholic churches for midnight mass. Can you imagine seeing "Midnight mass brought to you by Gatorade" . Or the same stories you hear every year on the news about the hottest new toy and the idiots that are lining up at Toys R Us at midnight on Thanksgiving just to get a crack at the 1 of 25 that are available? (Remember the Furbee??) Its just another holiday that has been ruined by commercialism. I would guess that you all know the way I voted. As long as we allow it to happen it will continue to happen. /RANT OFF Blues KAI There's no truer sense of flying than sky diving," Scott Cowan
ArcAngel0223 0 #14 November 8, 2004 I wouldn't even try... all the "retail establishments" your talking about would counter with an argument of being in violation of the first amendment(right to free speech), if you were lucky enough to get a temporary restriction placed on them, after a long drawn out legal battle they would reinstate their policy and continue on with business as normal, then they would pry sue you for restitution of their sales and retail crowd lost during the debacle.... p.s. Am I a lawyer? No, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.. literally!
Nightingale 0 #15 November 8, 2004 doubtful. many cities and HOAs already restrict christmas light displays and decor to certain times of the year. This is probably not a freedom of speech issue. Mary- I don't have a problem with stores selling holiday merchandise. That's different from decorations. I've got no problems with any store putting out merchandise whenever they want. It's the stuff that's not for sale that's at issue.

Nightingale 0 #22 November 9, 2004 I had all my holiday shopping done a month ago. Whenever I find something good for someone throughout the year, I pick it up. I'd just like to go to the mall and buy a new pair of jeans without being barraged by holiday stuff weeks before thanksgiving.
