You can get used to dialations. What really sucks is when they pull stitches from the cornea. It's a f'ed up feeling watching a doc come at your eye with a razor blade and a very pointy pair of tweezers.

Still, diaations are nto fun, so you definitely have my sympathises.

I got an eye exam. Even though it was dark driving home, the stop lights had nice starburst effects. It made me nauseated to drive home like that. [:/] Luckily my pupils are back to normal. *Whew* I would not be able to tolerate that for long.

I've had Lasik surgery done so I completely understand the whole coming at your eyes thing. It's an interesting experience watching the top of your eye being sliced and then peeled back, then the laser in your eye, the smell of burnt eyeball, and then them putting the flap back on top of your eye. And then after all that, coming back a few months later to have the RK part of it done and knowing they are slicing your eye.

And, now I'll have AK done in a couple of weeks to "touch up" my eyes. Found out that the back of one of my lenses is a bit "foggy" so they're going to keep an eye on it and depending on how it goes, they might replace the lense. YUK!!! Hopefully, it doesn't get bad.

3 surgeries on one eye?!?!? No wonder your lens is starting to get cloudy, all that trauma going on. And THAT is why I make sure patients know exactly what can go wrong with refractive surgery and only send truly ideal candidates for it. It isn't something to be taken lightly. Your starbursts at night is probably as much from the surgery as dilation since the light will hit the interface of surgery/non surgery zones of the cornea and scatter quite a bit.

the smell of burnt eyeball

I've heard people say they could smell burning flesh, but I did not. Maybe my sense of smell ain't that good. The only uncomfortable part was the suction thing that helped stableize my eyes - but I had an intralase laser for cutting the flaps - they didn't use the razor blade thingy.

I never get my eyes checked any more. I probably should. But then again, I only go to the dentist about once every ten years, too.

Getting your eyes checked is about health, not prescription. You could have glaucoma, no symptoms, and be slowly losing your optic nerve. With dilation, we check the blood vessels of your eye, this mirrors the blood vessels of the body. Things like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart valve problems, blood clotting disorders, and certain medications all affect these. We look at the optic nerves which is a part of the neurological system. This can show evidence of MS, brain tumors, pseudotumor cerebri, and other problems. We look at the retina, which is a fairly common place for cancer to metastisize to. On top of all that we check for all the eye diseases as well. Looking at the front of the eye, including tears, lens, and iris can show things like autoimmune disease. Eyelids can be affected by many skin disorders.

Having had lasik, you are at higher risk for retinal tear/detachment, as well as corneal problems. These things are a much less of a problem if caught early.

Vision is important, glasses/contacts/lasik are important, but is not the reason for eye exams every 2 years if you are young and healthy (more often for kids and old people and those with health issues)

Your eyes are a part of every system of your body. Take them seriously.

Wow. Sounds so negative. Maybe eye doctors should exam your eyes looking for nice color, brightness, clarity and at the end of it, tell everyone how nice thier eyes look. I would pay for that service ;)
