Trick or Treat? - skydivers drop pumpkin

Recommended Posts

Someone requested that I post any information I had concerning the "infamous" pumpkin drop in 1987.
I've attached a scan of two newspaper clippings :):D

Sorry about the poor quality of the scan . . . limited to 60Kb upload here and lost some quality in the size reduction. I don't have any good OCR software so I didn't try to scan in the text.

( this should probably be moved to History & Trivia )

actually we tried to do that exact same jump today with a pumpkin, but we couldn't see where we were for the spot because of thick clouds... and we boringly, but wisely, called it off.

last thing we need at our DZ is farmer mcnasty with a hole in his house.

We just had a pumpkin drop competition at West Tennessee yesterday when clouds kept us from jumping. We went up to 800 feet with pumpkins a little bigger than basketballs, and one by one, took turns dropping theirs out the door trying to hit as close to the target as possible. Great loads of fun!

Here is a bowling ball jump from Hawaii, it was done over the ocean, we only killed some fish ;)

Nice picture...

Just curious... but what precautions did you take to make sure there would be no people/boats in the area where the ball dropped?

I'm guessing they looked out the door before they jumped.

??? I seriously hope they did more than that! Dropping a bowling ball from that high could cause some serious damage... and it's pretty hard to see much detail of what's going on on the ground from 10,000+ feet in the air.

We took the spot a mile or so out to sea. With the constant wind of 15-25 knots, it is very easy to go long, pull a foot higher than normal and make it home. You can see any boat that may be out there, and there is no one swimming or surfing alone that far from shore. Its all good.............;)

I'll ask Brian himself if he's at the DZ this weekend. ;)

Although, this means I'm risking getting my usual margarita from him. The things I do for you guys! :P

I was in a flour-bombing competition a few weeks ago, using lunch bags that were filled with flour (~3 lbs) & taped shut. We all got out at 3500 (separate passes) and the rule was no releases below 500 feet, so basically the downwind leg of the landing pattern was the bombing run. Good clean fun...ok, so kinda messy, but fun nonetheless. :)

What is the terminal velocity of a pumpkin?

(African and European:)

I dunno, we weren't high enough to let the pumpkins get to terminal... makes picking the right spot harder. :D

Drop run was 80 knots at 800 feet. They can still do serious damage hitting something on the ground. While there, I was told of an incident where a pumpkin crashed through the bathhouse roof. :$

I didn't get when it happened, but obviously Mullins changed the drop run path safely away from the DZ facilities afterwards. :D
