I Love and Hate Skydiving

Recommended Posts

There are so many wonderful things about this sport. The people are the main thing. It's funny there are not many sports where you could get so many people from different walks of life together and they all get along so well. The excitement, fun, silliness. It all just seems to blur together in a weekend of smiles. The way people take care of each other. You really have an extended family.

Then you have all the tradegies. The broken bones, permananent damage and death. Where else do you have a group of people where you know that in a few years, there is a good chance one of you might not be around any more.

In my 1.5 years in this sport, I've been hurt by my own stupidity, seen two friends get seriously hurt and now a person I know has died. It sucks.

This sport gives us soo much. Just remember, it take just as much as it gives. Be careful out there.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but stick around, you'll learn tons.

Just look at the Stolen Gear list:S

If the people you skydive with are really family, then where are they when you are broken up? Sure they rush to your side while you are in the hospital, and maybe hang out for a few weeks helping you out, but after a few months, you will know who your real friends are.

Or, don't show up at the DZ for a few months and see how many of your family members take the time to call you and see what you have been up to.

Get along?! Again, wait till you have been around the sport for awhile longer. Believe it or not, there are people that don't like other people just at the local DZs in my state.

Heck, there are people that post here that don't like each other.

I've been in this sport for years and years. I've lost more friends then I care to remember.

...and they all get along so well.***

I got home from Chicks Rock with a new injury on my forehead and the first thing my wife says is "Did you get into a fight?"

My response was "Skydivers don't fight!" I can't even remember the last time I saw a fight at the DZ if ever.

Don't worry about it. Once you've been in the game a few years, you'll realise that it isn't really that special, and that the community is made up of the same people that make up the rest of society. You'll meet the same mix of nice people and asses that make up the general population.

Maybe I am lucky, maybe I am special, who knows. When I was hurt, there were lots of people there for me. Those people will always be special to me. And I got a few calls when I was not around for a while.

There is tons of good and some bad.

Yes, I had the same while I was hurt & grounded. I felt soooo much love that I was surprised and overwhelmed at times.

I was jumping a new camera suit and was in a stand when the buckle on the wingtip came loose and whacked me! I was amazed at how much it actually hurt...B|

But be quiet because I told everyone else it was a bird strike...;)

I won't tell a soul. We were thinking it was from a keg-stand anyway.
