peacefuljeffrey 0 #1 October 3, 2004 Can anyone offer how to fix this? People post photos on this site and when I try to save them, they are defaulting to save as BITMAP images, even though I'm sure they're posted as JPG. When I get the "save as" dialog, when I pull down the window that says BMP, there is no other option in the list -- just BMP. I think this has to do with my cache getting filled up (at whatever setting I had allowed it to store), and although I deleted the temporary internet files, it's still doing this -- but not at every site, just this one! Anyone know how to fix this? -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"
rwieder 0 #2 October 3, 2004 save the pics as bitmaps to uour desktop, etc..., then convert them to a .jpeg format after you've saved them.-Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"
hooked 0 #3 October 3, 2004 I've wondered the same thing. I know how to fix it on other sites, by deleting my temp files, but that doesn't work here, why????? Quincy 0 #5 October 3, 2004 To save as a .jpg in XP, the easiest way I've found is right click on the picture and select "Copy." The go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint. When 'Paint' opens, at the top click Edit>Paste, then go to File>Save As. In this window, you now have the ability to save as any of about 8 different types, although '24-bit Bitmap' is the default. hooked 0 #6 October 3, 2004 These are all ways to save as .jpg but it doesn't answer the question of why it doesn't save as .jpg when you right click and select 'save as'. peacefuljeffrey 0 #7 October 3, 2004 QuoteThese are all ways to save as .jpg but it doesn't answer the question of why it doesn't save as .jpg when you right click and select 'save as'. J Exactly. Just days ago it worked fine! I'm pretty sure that filling the cache alotment is what might be bringing this on. But several other locations on the web where I saved JPGs directly worked fine, and so did DZ.com for a long time. Now they all come over as BMP. I know I could save and then change format but that is a big bitch. I just want it doing what it was doing just a short time ago! ugh! -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Derekbox 0 #10 October 3, 2004 I know exactly what you are talking about. Its a flaw in XPs internet explorer. When the cache gets full it starts saving jpgs at bitmaps. Annoying as crap. The eas(iest) fix that I know of is to dump IE's temp memory/cache. Close the browsers and restart. Itll work again until it fill. Repeat. Why this bug hasnt been addressed ???? For further info do a google search. Derek
hooked 0 #11 October 3, 2004 I'm still using Win98 and when I can't save a JPG as a JPG, I know it's time to dump the IE temp. files. On this site that doesn't work. I am able to save other pics on other sites, but if I try here it always saves as a BMP. J -------------------------------------- Sometimes we're just being Humans.....But we're always Human Beings. peacefuljeffrey 0 #16 October 5, 2004 QuoteRight click on the link to the picture, don't open it... then save as. If you open it then try and save the picture it saves as a bitmap on a lot of computers I'll try that when I'm back home on my computer there. But why all of the sudden? It didn't used to do that. One notable thing: at the same time as it's mistaking the pics as BMPs, it also has "untitled" for the name of the file! It seems as though the computer just hasn't been told what the "header" information for the pic is... I'm still hoping someone here can offer a true remedy that will set this back to rights. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" You're saying that if you right click on the link itself, not the photo, you get a chance to save as a jpeg but you have to choose "save target as"? Not sure I follow you here. I can't try it yet, until I get home. Right now I'm on a piece of shit MAC at work. As a matter of fact, I'm going to try it on my old desktop computer at home (running Win98) and see if the same thing happens as on my laptop running XP... rmsmith 1 #20 October 24, 2004 Nope, no conspiracy! I just tried a fresh install of w2k & ie6sp1 in a vmware instance, and the images were rendered as JPG's with ie, but following the security hotfixes (windows update) the images were rendered as BMP's. This is a feature...or bug depending on how you see things.

rmsmith 1 #22 October 24, 2004 QuoteHmm....interesting. But I have only encountered it with this site....so far. You're right about this site, and others with copyrighted images such as satellite imagery. I tried saving images here on dropzone with mozilla on linux, and it saves them ok, but it also gives an error message. There's probably some script that the browser's interpreter reads as copy-protected or some such thing. Unfortunately, I'm way out of my depth in this area. Spudmuffin 0 #23 October 24, 2004 Here's a round about way to grab a jpg... 1. Click the link to open/view the image 2. Once the image is opened, right click on the image and select E-mail picture from the menu 3. E-mail the file to yourself. (Notice that the attached file is still in its original format.) Hope this helps. Spud

Icon134 0 #25 October 25, 2004 Its a windows bug of some kind I'm sure... you can convert the bitmaps using windows Imaging software. By opening it and saving it as a jpg. But its still frustrating to deal with. Scott
