The 'catch' is that you see google sponsored links on one side of the screen. The privacy paranoiacs bitch about it, but it doesn't invade anyone's privacy -- just looks for keywords in your email and matches them up with keywords on ads people have paid for, and shows those ads to you. Anyhow, it's nice to have a large email box for free. They're in a beta test period, and they keep giving everyone who's currently signed up invitations for other people to join.
