anyone going to PELL CITY?

Recommended Posts

Yep, Girls weekend!!!!!B|B|B|

Got an email in to find out what's gonna be on the menu.... I'll let you know soon as I hear.

Can't really say as far as how small. I've only been to PC and ASC at Cedartown GA. It's a lot smaller that than Cedartown. The DZ is basically a decent size hangar, very large target area and we have a Porter for regular weekends (typically 20 min. ride to 14K). I doubt that there will be any other AC brought out for the weekend, but I could be wrong.
If you do decide to come up, just be aware that the traffic is going to be hellacious on I-20, there's a race at Talledega this weekend (and that's right next door, you can see the track on the ride up).

I'll let you know what I find out.

Hey dude,
Laura (the manifest at pc), said to check the events link here at dz.com... There won't be any specialty AC there but come on up if you can make it. There is a link to the web site for directions, if you get lost (it can be kinda' tricky to find) you can call the dz directly at 205-884-6937.

Hope to see ya' there.

Almost forgot, there's a shower at the dz and you can camp out at the dz with us if you like. Also Sammy's Touch-n-Go (resturant) is on the other side of the target area, we'll probably all go there Sat. night for dinner/drinks/drinks/drinks....

anyone going to the boogie in pell city this weekend?

yeah... just decided to go...

i should be gettin' there about 1-2pm on saturday. i understand donations of beer are customary for a) first boogies (this'll be mine!), b) first visit to a drop zone (um, okay), and c) just about anything else - so it would seem. fine - i can do that...

very much looking forward to meeting some dz.commers there... and locals.. and cool skydiving chicks... and whoever else drops in...

does a liberal supply of vodka count as a suitable substitute for a case of beer?

You need to be aware of the possibility of ATC shutting the DZ down during the race because of the amount of air traffic around the track. I have seen it happen several times in the past.

I haven't jumped there in a couple of years, except for practice jumps for demos. I usually go up to Cullman, where they have their own King Air. 8 to 10 jumps a day, even on non-boogie weekends, are easily possible.

To each their own, but I hope you guys won't get shut down this weekend. Just call ahead and find out what the odds are. If management is smart, they'll contact ATC and the FAA just to make sure. You don't want to have surprises.

I-20 is only really bad eastbound to Pell City in the mornings, especially on Sunday, and REALLY bad westbound to Birmingham after the main race is over.

I can remember taking the back roads from south of Birmingham to Pell City for a Mullins King Air boogie on race weekend years ago, probably 1996, and being on the first load at 8 AM sharp that Sunday, and looking out the door at I-20, which was bumper-to-bumper from the hwy 77 exit in Lincoln all the way to Leeds, some 22 miles. A lot of my buddies were late getting in to the DZ.

Thanks for the heads-up, Billy. I know there wasn't a TSR posted for Talledega, but I didn't think about all of the extra traffic being a problem and I don't think they'll setup their temp atc there for a smaller race like this one. It would really suck if we got shut down, supposed to be awesome weather this weekend.

yeah, that would suck.

worst case... we have to just light the beer lamp mid-afternoon. the things we do for our sport...

not to rain on Pell City, but if we do get shut down and just gotta jump there's also The Farm, 94 miles northeast, Skydive Alabama in Decatur, about 115 miles north(ish), and Skydive Opelika about 100 miles southeast. I've not been to any of them, but have read great things about The Farm here.. I was thinking it might be worth the drive just for the hell of it..

but i'm puttin' my money on a great weekend right there!

I'll admit I don't know anything about TSRs, but twice a year, the Talladega Airport becomes the second busiest airport in the nation, when NASCAR comes calling. Saturday has the ARCA race and that doesn't fill the place up, but believe me when I say the place will be packed and overflowing on Sunday, plus the Pell City airport is used by the banner-trailing planes you see sometimes at major events.

Skydive Alabama in CULLMAN and The Farm in Cedartown are great alternatives if you wanted to avoid the traffic on the highways. Opelika only has a couple of narrow-body C182s that only go up to 8000 feet. I haven't been there in a few years but the people were nice.

Again, check with the Pell City DZ to be sure you know what is going to happen or could happen because of the races.
