slug 1 #30 September 29, 2004 QuoteWell I know I need to get out Well I dont wont to get out.......yet I only have a few years before I can retire!! Hi JB I served with a guy who had 19 yr's and watched him get out.. Really woke me up, he was married and they wanted him to do another tour in SEA holding up the domino's. He said his wife couldn't handle it. The sand pile is going to be around for at least a few more yr's. No AC unacceptable it gets hot over there! IMO the closer you get to retirement the harder it is to get out and the more they can screw with you. R.I.P. R.i.P
jb092 0 #31 September 29, 2004 Well I would have to disagree. If someone served 19 years and got out.......something else was involved with the discharge. It was probably forced!! My wife would never make me get out just one year from a check every month. Her brother is over there and the only thing she askes me is I dont volunteer to go untill he is home. Then again now that I think about it she is very understanding and is looking forward to the day I retire!!! What could possibly go wrong?

jb092 0 #37 September 29, 2004 I am sorry but at 19 years......there has got to be more to the story. He could have spent that last year doing nothing but sitting at home, or what ever he wanted!!! Maybe now, but back in the late 60's it wasn't that way. Sorry we had a failure to communicate. With 1 year left Uncle Sam gave him orders for another tour in SEA 15-18 month's unacompaned in SEA. He had a choice and took it. Not for himself for his wife.... Like maybe her suicide if he left. We spent enough time away from home PCS and TDY back to back that some of the married guy's were under a lot of stress. One crew chief stole a C-130E from Mildenhall Air base England around 1968-69. So he could fly back to his wife. He kept the plane, his widow got his life insurance. Some of the info is one the web. R.I.P.
lowtimer 0 #40 September 29, 2004 1. When did you know it was time to get out? When I thought not having an education could potentially bite me in the ass later, and I could get said education for free! I also found myself hating garrison more than I liked the field. 2. How did you handle the transition? Not well initially. Started school in Chicago and didn't know anyone. Felt alienated from the kids at school. Drank a lot. Academic probation & dropped out. Came out of IRR & volunteered for Iraq. Came back from there and got my shit together with the help of childhood friends and army buddies! Back in school and liking it! 3. What were the difficult parts of leaving/entering the real world? Easy parts? Difficult: Felt overwhelmed by life choices that were previously made for me. Found it difficult to maintain relationships with people who hadn't been in the service. Easy: Doing whatever I wanted for PT whenever the hell I wanted! Civilian jobs were quite easy. Had money to skydive after deployment, which helped keep me sane. 4. Would you go back in, given the chance? Thinking about SF after graduation if I don't become a fat ass Would like to work for a company like Blackwater but I don't have a competitive resume yet I'm thankful to have served with some really great guys. I still miss the camaraderie and hope I eventually have a job where I can experience that feeling again. Maybe that's why I like skydiving. A bunch of people that "aren't wired right" (ex-girlfriend's words) coming together and having a good time! ---------------------------------- Successfully avoiding adult responsibility since 1978! One that ALMOST got him killed. He's a retired SEAL and knows his shit. The rumor mill says Triple Canopy is better. More money last I heard too. Go SF.......it'll open MANY doors into that sort of world.

You best have your shit in order if you plan on applying with them or anyone else thats reputable. If the paperwork, background checks don't get you the certification training will. Most show up and are let go because they didn't bring their A game with them. You better be switched on and ready to do business otherwise your wasting your time."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
wingnut 0 #43 September 29, 2004 When did you know it was time to get out? when i started baybysitting airman more than i was fixing planes.. hopeflully my palace chase paperwork goes through i'll find out in about a month. How did you handle the transition? don't know that yet.... trying to pay of bills rightnow as the reserves will only be about 10% of what i make now.... What were the difficult parts of leaving/entering the real world? Easy parts? i think the thing that will be the most difficult will be having no health insrance.... Would you go back in, given the chance? i plan to try after i get a 4 year degree.... "O" 's make some nice bucks!!!! buti might just go back enlisted.. not sure.... that is if they let me.......we'll see how things are in 4-5 years..... as some others have said, i would stay in for 20+ if i actually got to do my job all day long instead of fight with politics/ baybysit people.......it did feel good when i got to drop off my troop atthe front gate knowing he was out of the military and barred from the base....lets just say he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed and the many chances he got to correct his behavor didn't work.... i wonder if he made it home on the 100 bucks he got in his last paycheck.... heheh utah to vermont.... probly not.............(don't mean to come off as mean but i gave this guy all the chances to fix things and he still couldn't use common sence...)... ______________________________________ "i have no reader's digest version"

gaskydiver 0 #45 September 29, 2004 Knew it was time when they wanted to send me remote for a year to Korea, without my family. Been in 15 yrs at the time. Two long tours to Europe, with too many TDY's to count while there. Family was way more important than going away from them for a year. So I retired. Transition was a little rough at first. Spent a couple months with no income, except retirement check, which at lest covered the house payment. After that I realized there really was life after the military. Don't know if I'd go back in or not. I think I'll just leave it to the 20 year olds.
