File Sharing, which is the best?

Recommended Posts

I have Kazaa Resurection, but it is slow as hell sometimes and fast sometimes. My brother has kataa lite++ and his is a little better. How about E Donkey, or Bittorrent, or shareaza. Which one do you think is the best and why, and also if there is something that each program is better for include that. Kazaa Resurection sucks at software, but excells at music.

Of course all of this is for test purpose so I can try out things before I buy them.

Direct Connect Client/Networks are where more and more things are going these days. (do a google search for DC++ or Direct Connect). You'll be able to get a list of public hubs easily, but you need to ask around and get in on a private hub.

The network isn't superior, the technology isn't superior (basic P2P xfers), just the concept. Direct Connect hubs are similar to the old BBS days in the sense they care about quality and if you don't share files, they will kick you out. Score a good private hub and you'll be set.

Music - LimeWire
Large "program" files - BitTorrent
Movies/Videos - Toss up between lots of clients.

Big issue with the Bit Torrent applications is finding the .Torrent files to get started. For little things like music that is at least popular enough to make it to any radio staion in the last 3 years LimeWire works great since it seeks outs and notifies you if its got a corrupted file instead of you playing it only to hear skreaching half way through it.

Music - I can't believe no one has mentioned Soulseek yet. I am not a huge fan of P2P in general, but Soulseek is the best there is. I actually use it so much it pretty much makes me a hyprocrite when I say I don't like P2P. Slsk.org I believe...

I also get full albums off of IRC a lot. IRC can be a pain in the ass to use and I never used it until I found XDCC Catcher (xdcccatcher.com I believe), an interface that makes searching IRC networks for files as easy as using a P2P program. You just have to wait an hour or so after starting Catcher to let it connect to all the thousands of servers. IRC is also great for software, movies, anything.

Usenet is another good source for EVERYTHING (music, movies, games, apps) but is not user friendly by any means. I've used it for so much stuff over the years it's not even funny.

Edonkey, torrents, etc... they all work. But I don't prefer them as much as what I've listed.
