mnealtx 0 #6 September 23, 2004 QuoteI am just wondering if any of you donate (blood or money) to disaster relief, especially now with all of the hurricanes ripping through and taking so many lives and homes. I used to donate blood regularly, can't now due to having lived in Europe (mad cow disease) and the fact that I'm on cholesterol meds. I also donate in my local community back home. Shortly after 9/11, my oldest daughter did a benifit ride to support the people in NYC. She rode around the outskirts of San Antonio carrying the flag and asking people to "fill the boot" to help the victims. She raised a bit over $1000 that went directly to the victims. The local news and radio did a couple of interviews with her, and there were people that drove all of Loop 1604 to find her and donate. I was DAMNED proud of her!Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. VanillaSkyGirl 6 #14 September 23, 2004 Thank you for this thoughtful post, Kelly! I donate money only because I weigh about 95 lbs. (They have a weight limit for people who want to donate blood.) Besides that, for many years, my parents have been key members physically and financially helping to run a charity organization across the US that sends proceeds mostly to children's hospitals in Peru, South America, and I often help with that. They have raised a lot of money for the disater victims in the US, as well. *** If anyone has a specific place in Southern California where I can send CLOTHING/PERSONAL ITEMS ONLY to be forwarded to disaster relief families across the US, then please post or PM me with the info. I am packing things up and out right now as I am moving into my new home this weekend. Thank you! ***
Snowbird 0 #15 September 23, 2004 As often as possible I donate blood. Used to give every time a blood drive came through town. These days they only do it by appointment during the drive, you can't just show up, so that has cut down on how often I can get in. I kinda zone out watching the little bag fill up. Takes me forever to fill it up, and the motion is so relaxing... In past years during bad fire seasons, I've gone through my linnens and towels and kitchen stuff, given it to people who've lost their homes. And a bit of cash to help out, when I can. Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein

peacefuljeffrey 0 #19 September 24, 2004 Quoteyes I donate. i donate orgasm to needyhotties! LOL seriously, ( i dont wanna hijcak the thread yet) I donate whenever I can. blood, aphresis, money...and the item isted above Wow, another aperesis donor! I started doing that as a senior in high school. As I understand it, now they have a machine that can do the donation using only ONE arm! For those who don't know, aperesis donations centrifuge the blood and take out part (usually platelets for clotting, or plasma), and return the rest of the blood, reconstituted with saline, to the donor. It used to be done with a needle in each arm (going out and coming in) and take about an hour and a half. (OUCH!) I have been prohibited from donating for about a year or more, now, since they instituted a new (and paranoid?) rule that if you spent more than 3 months in England between like '88 and '96 or something, they are worried you might carry vCJD (the human version of Mad Cow Disease), and they won't let you donate. I was in England for just over 3 months in '92, and the first time they asked me if I had been there, the question did not seem new even though it was. I told them yes, and they said sorry, you can no longer donate. I have B+ CMV- blood. The CMV- aspect made my blood safer to give to premature babies and cancer patients -- weak immune systems -- so they were always hounding me for donations, and I was glad to give them. If they EVER rescind the Mad Cow rule, I'll give again. It's kind of ridiculous: on one hand, the authorities tell us there is nothing to fear from Mad Cow Disease, that it's under control, etc., and that they DON'T believe you can get it from blood... but on the other hand, they NEED the blood DESPERATELY, and if there was any possibility that it would be safe from Mad Cow, they'd take it. I think they're not telling us all they know about it. In the meantime, NO WORD yet on a test for Mad Cow carrying. They can tell if you've HAD it -- by autopsying your brain after you've died of it. I wonder if they won't let British people donate blood in Britain if they've lived there the whole time. I mean, I was there from September to December 1992, and I can't donate in the U.S. for fear I might spread vCJD. What does that mean for donating blood AT ALL for people who live their whole lives in U.K.?! Ironically, there was a blood drive here today at work, in support of a local little girl with some type of leukemia. Blue skies, -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... freakflyer9999 1 #21 September 24, 2004 I just recently hit 18 gallons of blood donations. I give platelets which you can give much more frequently than whole blood and usually they can take more than one unit at a time. Generally speaking I try to donate 2-3 units every other week or so. Last month, I actually gave a whole gallon in 1 month, 2 triples and a double donation.

I donated platelets, but I'm still on the standard 8 week rotation. The bag of platelets though, I tell ya, was almost as big as the blood donation bags. Yikes!
