Tipping

Recommended Posts

Tip a cabbie? No way, they charge enough as it is:P

Tip a server? Absolutely, 20% for OK service, 25%+ for good service. We go to the same places so if you tip well, they remember and usually give even better service or extras. At our favorite Japanese steakhouse where the cook at the table, my boy-toy always orders the chicken and our cook, who remembers us, ALWAYS gives him steak instead, no extra charge;)

Hairdresser? Yea, I do, but I really don't think it's necessary. I go to the Hair Cuttery for a trim, so no frills there, but I still tip $2 for my $10 hair cut. If anything, just hoping she'll use it to fix her own hair. Ever notice how hairdresser's own hair looks like sh!t?:P

A delivery person? Again, yes, b/c it's like a server, but never more than 15-20%.

As a sidenote, you should always factor in tips when planning a vacation. It can really add up.:S

Ha! I've got that down now. But when I was in my regular PLF days, it wasn't about NOT flairing, it was about flairing at the WRONG time all the time. I blamed my bad eyesight, but we all know I just sucked at landing;):P I DO think it had something to do w/ the fact that I can not see sh!t and haven't been to the eye doctor since I was 10. Ha! Look out below!:P

If you can afford to drink in a bar, you can afford to tip! =$1 per drink
especially if your bartender takes care of you. I get 3 finger shots because I take care of people.
When you tip your waitress about 40% is split between the kitchen,bussers,hosts,bar,etc....
When you get the $6 lunch special,soup,appetizer,.... and tip 15%,You're an asshole c'mon throw down a couple bux eh?
A thank you is a nice gesture too, especially if your server did a good job.

I have a similiar philosophy. When people ask, "Why do you leave the last couple sips in every drink?" and I say, "b/c it's warm, it's backwash and I can afford another":P;)

Tipping a waitress or waiter?!! In the US??-- get real, OF COURSE!!! I waited tables from age 16 to 26, it paid for undergrad. and 1/2 of grad. in fact. The min. wage for servers is way below min. wage standard, when I waited tables it was on 2.10 an hour & on a slow day, it killed you. It's much higher now but it is still legal to pay servers sub-minimum wage. Your server may make as little as 3.85 in some states. Just keep this in mind, they get a lot messes & take a lot of 'tude. And most of the time, they take it politely.

What about carryout? I'm definitely not tipping if I'm picking up my own pizza, but what do you do when you pick your food up from a restaurant like Outback or Chili's? Tip them for handing you a box and ringing up the total?

noone i worked with at Outback expected tips for take away.... always nice when you get them but really....

The tip is part of the delivery person's pay. It's factored into what the employer pays him, etc. In order to keep the driver there with no tips, the employer would have to pay him more. In order to pay him more, the employer will have to charge YOU more for your pizza. Either way, you pay for it. Why are you bitching? At least under the current system, you have the option of being an asshole and not tipping

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Refer to the Are you an arsehole thread.
I don't tip, unless somthing exceptional has happened out of the ordinary job disctription:P
But I'm an Aussie, we have a much better pay structure for our hospitaility industry.

OTOH, I've seen people make $200 bucks in a night just from Tips in a bar in Chicago:S:S WTF, that's more tha I make

And as to the argument that those people who don't earn much by way of wage and tips, there is ALWAYS the option of doing somthing else. (it might not be easy but it's not impossible)
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

How's yours doing?

Close to for some people, especially college kids on scholarships and lower income brackets. In other countries, the standards are different and so is the pay scale but geesh-- in the states get real!!

*** The tip is part of the delivery person's pay. It's factored into what the employer pays him, etc. In

It's also factored into the way the IRS looks at peoples' tax returns, if they work in certain occupations like food service or hair styling. The IRS places such a heavy assumption of tipping that they will go after people in these trades if they think they're holding out on reporting income from tipping.
No matter whether or not these people actually earned the tips the IRS claims, because the IRS doesn't give a shit, they just shake these people down anyway. Because the IRS doesn't have the balls to go after the bigtime tax cheats, they just put the screws to the people who can't fight back.

Surveys have shown time and again that hourly wage earners tend to be the best tippers and that higher salaried types are usually the cheapskates. And religious types are the worst of all, they just leave useless religioos tracts.

They are not useless. When I was young, I'd go drinking in a nearby college town. The commandment comandos were always stopping me on the street as I staggered from bar to bar and handed me tracts. I finally started keeping a pocket full and when they handed me one, I'd hand them one right back.
That being said, I really do respect people that live by their convictions even if I don't share them.

I worked in a lab as a college student... I've never worked in a service industry where tipping it the main portion of my income... I didn't have a scholarship.

Not that I don't tip... I do... just being devils advocate.
