BGill 0 #7 September 14, 2004 Down here in Australia they sell "Absinthe" but it isnt made from wormwood, so it doesnt have the hallucinogenic effects So I always get excited when I see it but then realize its only the fake stuff. I need to get to Europe and have some fun with the real deal
Frenchy68 0 #8 September 14, 2004 Does the indgredients say it contains something like "worm wood"? *** It's the real thing. All the different herbs (including wormwood). 89.9% alcohol. To be served with water and sugar, gently pouring the water over the sugar cube on a special spoon... It was about $100 for a 750ml bottle. However, even the new absinthes aren't made exactly from the old world recipe. (The amount of wormwood is greatly reduced. You cann't buy in stores what Van Gogh drank when he chopped his ear off. They do still make it underground, but the ones I found cost about $700 a bottle. The one we tried (I forget which one exactly) tasted like licorice and gave the effect of smoking a joint and taking a shot, but I think we should have taken more. (We took two shots worth with sugar cubes.)This ad space for sale.
 FIREFLYR 0 #23 September 14, 2004 The licorice taste is the anisette, that's what makes it cloud when you add cold water too. You can find many that are like the old recipe though fo less than $700. One thing I look for is no artificial coloring, the green should come from chloraphyl(sp?). another is that the wormwood is soaked (like a teabag) and not added as an oil. But there are too many places (and people) who think you should drink it straight up. Might as well drink paint thinner... Get the real thing, drink it the way it is supposed to be served...
