If anyone's ever in Bristol (UK) I'll treat you to a night out in Ether - a bar that specialises in absinthe... many many wonderful nights out vaguly remembered there... I might just have to take you up on that when i come home late November. I coudl do with a good night out that I nearly remember! Do you know if Lakota is still open? Frenchy68 0 #55 September 14, 2004 how do you drink it Frenchy, I do it several ways... with water like pastis with sugar flamed in a spoon with absinth, and then just cul-sec... *** 90% of the time like pastis, and I pour the water on a sugar cube (using the absinthe spoon). 10% of the time sugar flamed. And since I drink the 89,9° one, never cul-sec "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return." Ok, so I chickened out last night... I took one whiff of that stuff and almost gagged... Think I'll wait until my tastebuds are feeling a bit more brave... and also until a night where I don't have anything that I have to do the next day, so that I can experience the absinthe high properly. Frenchy68 0 #60 September 15, 2004 1/5 ABSINTHE, 4/5 WATER, POURED OVER SUGAR Seriously, did you take a whiff at pure absinthe? What was the alcohol content? bluelip 0 #64 September 16, 2004 Anyone try making their own? A wine / home brew shop I used to frequent had a selection of odd herbs/spices. Wormwood was one of the substances available. The Garcia-look-alike owner of the place convinced me to try it out. I took a bottle of EverClear (near ure grain alcohol) and made room for the wormwood. It turned green after a few days. After 10, I removed the strained the liquid. After that it sat in my cupboard for months because I lacked the intesinal fortitude to try it. When the time actually came, I tried a drop on my tongue. Ultra-bitter. I tried cutting half a shot of the substance w/ 6 packets of sugar and then mixing it into a cola. Nothing could kill the bitterness and taste. Is it supposed to be that harsh? Should I be expecting some boys in blue at my door in the morning for making this stuff? I have a near full bottle of the liquid left if anyone is in the South Jersey area and wants to try some. /* Mike Coles 'bluelip' */
Frenchy68 0 #65 September 16, 2004 Aaahhh! An adventurer you are! Absinthe has over a dozen different herbs. Going from hallucinogetic to epilectic. And then some... Most people get over focused on the thejon content. That is only part of it. It is indeed very bitter. But mixing wormwood with Everclear will not make absinthe. Not sure what it will actually create, but not absinthe. For the ultimate recipe, check with "Piisfish". He knows people who make the real thing... !N! jfields 0 #73 September 17, 2004 Argh! This thread is full of false information. Some could get you arrested. Some could land you in the hospital. 1) If you are looking for hallucinations or something, forget it. No such thing to be found from absinthe. 2) Distilling absinthe is illegal and can be fairly dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. 3) "Do it yourself" kits where you soak things in Everclear or vodka aren't absinthe whatsoever. And some of the ingredients are toxic if not handled correctly. 4) If you attempt to distill it yourself and discuss it openly on the internet, you may well end up with the DEA at your door. A number of vendors have been mentioned in this thread. Some are reputable, and some are not. Some products mentioned are good, and some are crap. If you are really interested, research it on the Internet before you do anything. Get past the "Thujone will make me trip" mentality and look at it like you would buying a bottle of really fine single-malt scotch. Any bottle of absinthe worth drinking will set you back at least $60, so it isn't cheap either. (Especially for Americans getting it into the country.) http://www.feeverte.net/ As mentioned by someone else, this site is loaded with resources and information. They aren't a vendor, so I'm not trying to push any brand or merchant. For people that do partake, ignorance and misinformation are perpetual problems that give everything a bad name. Think of it like crappy jouralism about skydiving fatalities. It puts jumpers at higher risk of having their little dz's shut down by hostile businesses and municipalities. So, be smart, be quiet, ask intelligent questions and do research before you send money to anyone, and you should be fine.
