Skydiving Video Game

Recommended Posts

any sd game Ive payed sucks. apparently its not a playable sport either.

they need to make a video game thats not JUST skydiving. they may as well make it drug running or something but the objective it to get the stuff to someone else. you woul dhave to start off LOOKING and WALKING around the streets making contancts stealing cars robbing people hiring pilots and diving into private yachts to make the delivery etc...

kinda like vice city meets cutaway; the movie.
there should be a begginers level where the student would have to pass a.f.f. ( or something video friendly) etc. then you should be able to build your skills and practice on weekends when you (EDIT)aren't (EDIT)muggin old laides!;)

I have both PS1 & PC games they suck compared to the old "PILOT WINGS" NINTENDO which has 4 levels of lic. to get. The Pilot Wings II (Nintendo) has skydiving as a BONUS level only.
Freefall & accuracy are used.

After reading this thread, I dug out my old PC SkyDive! game and installed it on my computer. This thing was designed for a 200MHz system, and that becomes very obvious when you run it on a 1.8GHz system. Talk about a high performance canopy--The game moved so fast I could barely control it. Actually, it kind of made the game (voted worst game of '99 by one of those gaming magazines--PC Gamer, maybe) more fun.

Due to time constraints and other projects the idea didn't go very far and I ended up making a tank battle game instead, but I started to write a 3d-freeflying fighting game (a la Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter, Tekken) in C++/OpenGL for my graphics class.

some concepts that were to be implemented...

-rounds are 60 seconds long B| and the timer is in altitude. fighting begins on the hill immediately after exit.

-would use/expand on combo system found in fighting games.

-as real of a physics engine as I can manage, I don't want it to just be another fighting game with everyone upside down on the screen. body movements should be realistic to perform the actions.

-transitions from sit/straddle/daffy could be performed, sitfly might be particularly defensive, whereas headdown would be more offensive an orientation, and certain moves/combos could only be started from particular positions.

-when your life meter is run all the way down, you cork out and lose the match.

feel free to steal this idea, I might pick the idea back up again, but at the moment I'm kinda swamped with work, grad school, and real skydiving.

/edited to add: I could also have arenas corrisponding to popular dropzones with specific aircraft/paint schemes as well as arial photos as ground textures...

Now THAT is a cool concept. I could definitely pump some quarters into a freefly combat game.

You can get patches for Microsoft Flight Sim 2004 which allow you to select a man under a canopy as a plane and allow you to sellect famous DZ's such as Perris as the airport.

Apparently someone's done quite a good job of it too from what I hear - ie all the physics and flight characteristics are supposed to be about right.

No freefall though and I guess slowly decending for a few minutes before restarting the game could get a bit boring.

When I played one of these patches on Flight Sim '98, the canopy had the characteristics of a glider, so you could actually dive at the ground and pull back up to a few thousand feet. Maybe it's been improved since then. It was cool playing with other players online and seeing somebody flying around under canopy out your cockpit window.
