Michele 1 #1 September 8, 2004 So I was watching the NASA live footage of the re-entry of the Sun cylinder which was capturing atomic information from around the Sun (I may not have got that correctly...) I didn't see the drogue deploy, and then the cylinder crashed to the ground. No deployment of the main parachute at all. It was supposed to be similar to a RAM air, about 34 feet long (dunno the sqft, nor "loading"...) if I understood it correctly, and there were helicopters waiting to "hook" it out of the sky. The pilots had practiced for years, and were confident about plucking it out of the sky. But... Well, there wasn't any main to hook. I wonder if the w/l combined with the speed of reentry blew the drogue/main? Sad...but they say not all of the science is lost. How much of it remains is still to be seen. adamjenner 0 #2 September 8, 2004 looks like the sun cylinder didn't go over it's safety procedures. but i found it funny how there was this big hype about it and how these pilots have been practicing and all, only to have the chute not open. hahaha...cheers to NASA

wildblue 7 #12 September 8, 2004 The drogue was deployed by a 'mortar'?? Is that what I heard? They shoulda talked to Bill Booth, I'll be he could have come up with a better idea!it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

adamjenner 0 #14 September 8, 2004 QuoteThe drogue was deployed by a 'mortar'?? Is that what I heard? you heard correctly. they think that the drouge deployed but was ripped away from the cylinder because of the "sheer velocity" and that's why it crashed. those scientists are slowly making their way to the cylinder aren't they...wait i think someone just touched it
scottbre 0 #15 September 8, 2004 any one got some inside info on who designed the deployment mechanism and drogue and parachute setup? "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" My Art Project
diablopilot 2 #16 September 8, 2004 This should make it perfectly clear to everyone that you MUST be careful about how you store your gear. In space, orbiting close to the sun followed by an atmospheric re-entry is number one on the list of bad places.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. lawrocket 3 #18 September 8, 2004 I wonder what the deployment speeds are for this. Why'd they choose a RAM air? My wife is hotter than your wife.
scottbre 0 #19 September 8, 2004 Eh, it's no big deal. $260 million mistakes, sound about right for NASA. This definately isn't going to be a selling point for them at the budget meeting though... hehe... "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" Slappie 9 #20 September 8, 2004 Very curious if their able to salvage any of the collected "particles" for research. Also, could they have just exposed the world some new alien virus? C'mon you know those aliens, they've sapped my motivation, tried to steal my beer. Who knows what else they could be up too. This definately isn't going to be a selling point for them at the budget meeting though... hehe... This happened a while ago, on a Mars mission. Well it seems Nasa or someone at JPL made all the calculations in meters, BUT programmed the rover in feet.
