What's important?

Recommended Posts

Talked to my landlord a few minutes ago (he lives next door). He's out boarding up windows. He thought bailing town - and even the state - was a good idea and suggested that I take anything I can't bear to lose with me.

This is a new experience - deciding what "stuff" is that important and what is not. Just to make it more interesting I have to keep it to one or two plastic storage containers since that's about all that's going to fit in my car.

The photo albums are a given, along with a few of the framed pictures on the walls. A few books and a couple of stuffed animals that have sentimental value. Important papers - but those won't take up much space.

What else? As I look around my house I'm struck by the fact that there isn't much more "stuff" that I'd be devastated to lose. It's just stuff... and stuff can be replaced.

What would you take with you if you had to leave home not knowing what would remain when you could return?

I've thought about this before. My main concern is my kitties, after that comes my pictures and computer. I have soooo many pics on my computer that it has to come with me. The rest is replaceable.

Photos deffinately, a box that has lots of things from my childhood in it and my Savannah Monitor, everything else is replaceable but I'd also like to take with me: my gear, my desktop and laptop, a couple stuffed animals with sentimental value, a few CD's with programs on them that I need, my snowboard/boots, and some clothes.

Simply, the things that cannot be replaced easily are a must have. All other objects can be easily replaced.

In order:

Pets
Computer, PDA, and Cell phone (got to be able to reach people to find another place to stay)
Other memories - photo albums, priceless (to me) things
A few days worth of clothes
Skydive Gear (expensive, but can be replaced, so not high priority)

I hope the weather is nice to you this time and the storm veers off course and hits the east coast instead.;)

Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast!
Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! Cool!

There are three things I can think of:

1.) Credit cards, passports, ID's, birth certs, bank shtuff, everything else is material...

2.) Don't forget to bring your rack!!;)

3.) Please leave the closet door open so I can get out!!!B|B|

All joking aside, be safe dood!

I went through that list last year when there were wildfires everywhere. Didn't have to evacuate, but I decided what to take.

Pets of course
My important legal papers and stuff
Sentimental stuff like pictures, jewelry, and my wedding dress
Gear
Hard and paper copies of my writing
Hard drive

One thing, thinking about it made me realise that I was keeping all my important papers and documents in too many places. I've since gathered them, and keep them together, easy to grab. I know too many people who had ten minutes to evacuate, and lost everything.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

cards, and letters... I have saved letters and cards from people that cared about me over the years... and that box would be one of the first to go with me along with the pictures and camera equipment. ;)

Not to worry, Joe is safe and with me.

Lisa, when my dad was stationed in Florida and Guam, we had to rush out of the house more then a few times. My mother was very well organized and kept that emergency box ready to go at all times. I'm trying to think what all she had in it.

Important papers, you know, birth certificates, bank papers, passports, CC information...etc.

Pictures that can't be replaced. If you have some that are framed, are they copies? Do you have the originals?

Pets and food for them, water and food for yourself, a few days of a change of clothes. Flashlight, blankets, or one of those silver emergency blankets. Extra batteries, and a radio. Rain gear and a warm jacket.

Lap top, gear, and cell phone. I know the cell phone won't work if you all get hit hard, but once the storm has passed, you'll want that.

Everything else can be replaced.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you won't have to leave. Doesn't that storm know who he/she is messing with?

I'm leavin' the state. Like, tonight. Like, as soon as I can get the car packed, finish getting the house squared away and grab what's important from the shop.

The Red Cross guy on the radio suggested that everyone in central Florida choose the next 24 hours or so to go visit an inland state.

Assuming that I can find a gas station that still has gas before my tank is empty I'm headed for Georgia.

Smart move. I sat through a force 3 once, and it wasn't one of my finer intellectual moments.

What's important? In no particular order: Pictures, credit cards, jewelry, incredibly sentimental or irreplaceable knick-knacks (e.g. the ashtray your kid made that always makes you smile), laptop, pets, children, cell phone, address book, important documents (e.g. title to something that was hard to get), enough food and water to put up with stuff being closed for 300 miles, some toilet paper, a couple of plastic bags. A pillow and a sheet, just in case you end up sleeping in the car.

Make sure that whatever you need to take out to change your tire is OK to take out.

Drive safe.

The fire alarm went off in the officers mess one night. 1/2 asleep I found myself outside with my rig in one hand, my logbook in the other and my laptop over my shoulder. My rig I need, my logbook has too many memories and the insurance money for my "burnt" laptop would pay for the Eloy holiday boogie :DB|

Lisa, if you make it all the way to Tennessee (west side) you are more than welcome to stay with us. We have 2 extra bedrooms and a hottub.
