Brian425 0 #1 August 28, 2004 Wow, so the bills are coming in from my injury earlier this month. All I can say is thank God for insurance. Plastic Surgeon 19,500 Anesthiesia 2,900 Hospital 7,350 Misc Dr's and charges 2,800 And I have a few more bills are coming. Mainly my second hospital stay for surgery. I figure it will probably come to about $40,000. I won't complain about paying medical insurance for a while. LOL. Be careful out there guy. Have fun and be safe. Brian425 0 #3 August 28, 2004 I landed out on 8/7 and hit an apple tree. I tried to land on the dirt road in an apple orchard. Not my best decision. I posted about it in Incidents. I broke my cheek bone, eye socket, blew out the floor of my eye and broke my nose. And I was wearing a full face. OUCH! To add insult to injury, the very first thing they gave me to eat when I was stabilized in the hospital was apple sauce. I could not eat solid food and they did not know what kind of tree I hit. I laughed so hard when the brought it in. And a big thanks to all my friends who sent me apple pies, apple juice, apple jam, apple sauce, home made apple ice cream and for the one wonderful person who brought my hard cider. Muenkel 0 #4 August 28, 2004 I completely understand the whole Doctor bill thing. Even after insurance (and I have decent insurance) my portion is over $20,000 now. _________________________________________ Chris
Brian425 0 #5 August 28, 2004 Right now I only have to pay about $1,000 of the bill. which is GREAT!! That was because I chose to have a private room in the hospital. I always buy the best insurance plan from work. It's about $200 more per year; but, well worth it. Without it, I would have been screwed. United Health Care has been pretty good so far. I would recommend them. The only time you should look down on someone is when you are offering them your hand.
Muenkel 0 #6 August 28, 2004 Speaking of medical bills, what's the deal with receiving 32 seperate bills for one CTScan or Xray??? I mean, you have to pay the doctor who looks at it, the lab who does them, the person who wheels you into radiology, the person who makes up your file, the doctor who tells you the results, it goes on and on...... _________________________________________ Chris

Or when the CT scan guy submits the bill first and he is out of network. Then you try to call up with a severe concussion and explain that it was all from the same emergency room visit. And you presurgery screen done by an in network doctor who sent it to an out of network lab. It goes on and on and on. LOL. I am actually getting to know some of the people by name. They know me as "The Skydiver" I finally got them down to just the $50 for the emergency room visit. I had to review every bill and contact them about it. It was worth it, it saved me about $1,200. Muenkel 0 #8 August 28, 2004 I love the in network, out of network stuff. You're in an ambulance, with your head about to explode, being pumped with morphine, puking in a bucket...it's not exactly the time I would check my in-network list. _________________________________________ Chris
Brian425 0 #9 August 28, 2004 Were you looking at my ambulance ride? That seems sooo familiar. LOL Only I did not get the morphine. You must have a better medical plan. My doctor's bills are going to be insane. I just got my statement from the hospital. Came up to about 35,000 dollars. And that's just the hospital, none of the doctors. I was lucky with my ambulance ride though. They gave me morphine. I guess they couldn't take my whining for too long. He he. The ambulance bill wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it still sucked. Thank god for insurance even if it's crappy like mine is. They also helped me with the doctors and hospital with billing. They also helped me get the negotiated rate instead of full price. Also as far as the Canadian and European systems work, I agree everyone should have access to high quality medical care. It is all how it is funded. Right now, my medical is less than 2% of my annual salary. If I was living in Europe, my tax rate would offset this savings. For me the US system is a better deal. For people without heath insurance, the US system sucks. What is worse, the majority of people without insurance are usually the midlle to lower income families. These are the people that would be crippled by a $50k medical bill. This needs to change; but, it will take time.
