ACMESkydiver 0 #1 August 26, 2004 My doc said a few months ago that my heart palpitations and pain was due to too much caffeine... Ok, so I said I'd cut down. I lied. As far as I'm concerned, caffeine is the true nectar of the Gods and necessary to sustain life. I gave it the ole' college try to relinquish my tight grip upon my coffee mug handle a few months ago...by the third day I was ready to kill someone else or myself, and the MIGRAINE I got from it was so intense I was in tears... Nope! So, just in case in the future I should ever wanna attempt this again, how did you kick the habit? (I mean without starting to smoke or gain 500 pounds or shit like that...) -Or did you kick the habit at all? ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. peregrinerose 0 #2 August 26, 2004 I kicked the caffeine habit by buying a bottle of water instead of my usual 24 oz coffee before my 2 hour commute to work. Damn near fell asleep at the wheel. Stopped about 15 miles down the road, and bought the coffee. So, my caffeine quitting lasted all of 20 minutes, but it's the thought that counts, right?? tspillers 0 #3 August 26, 2004 My Father quit while going through Chemo. He started by mixing 1/2 and 1/2 regular and decaf grounds. Then he went to 1/3 regular and 2/3 decaf. Then he switched to decaf and quickly went to instant decaf (yuk). If worked for him. He also found that he quit adding sugar to his coffe when he switched. My guess is cause he was pretty much just drinking hot water. July 4th weekend he was drinking regular. I am not sure what he is drinking now. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

peregrinerose 0 #6 August 26, 2004 Quote Holy crap, I thought I was bad!! It's my commute. Never drank nearly that much before, now that I am in a car 4+ hours a day and putting over 1000 miles a week on my car, I go through at least a pot of coffee a day. I have a heart thing too, which is annoyed by caffeine (ectopic foci, kindof a heart hiccup when an area other than the SA node dictates when to beat). Feels kinda neat though and I'm not dead yet. adamUK 3 #7 August 26, 2004 Slowly cut it down via decaf then eventually cut it out. I used to drink so much coffee it was ridiculous and was giving me problems with my waterworks. Thing is, when you are off the caffine, when you do have a coffee you bounce around like mini-super hero. Had a red bull before jumping once - man, getting stable in freefall was well bad. I'm pretty upbeat as it is around people so if I deprived myself of coffee and then take it again, I would drive people insane...I'd be like a puppy wanting to play. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Spatula 0 #10 August 26, 2004 My wife and I switched to half-n-half coffee (half decaf, half regular). Didn't even notice it....do that, then after a few weeks switch to decaff.....
PLFXpert 0 #11 August 26, 2004 Ahhhh, yes, caffeine! I was told the same thing. I have anxiety, which also contributes to palpitations, but "supposedly" caffeine makes it worse. Ehh emmm...well, since my coffee makes me VERY happy, I don't see how it could contribute. I have cut back, though. I used to have my morning Starbucks Venti latte, two-three Mountain Dews and an evening tea. For a while, when I was "being good" I still got my coffee to satisfy the craving, but went for decaf. It worked for a while, but let's face it...decaf BITES the big one. It doesn't taste near as good. So, I still get my Venti (not decaf), but limit myself the rest of the day to one Moutain Dew, a Diet soda or two, and/or water. Hey, it's the best I can do...Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
PLFXpert 0 #12 August 26, 2004 QuoteMy doc said a few months ago that my heart palpitations and pain was due to too much caffeine... Have the doc prescribe you some Xanax. That will solve the palpitations, make you tired, and then coffee is a NECESSITY to keep you awakePaint me in a corner, but my color comes back. SarahC07 0 #13 August 26, 2004 My doc didn't tell me to cut back on the caffiene... but I have self diagnosed my lack of sleep being directly related to the large sums of caffiene I consume. I can no longer drink caffiene after about 2 PM if I plan on getting to sleep before midnight. Caffiene is a drug! You're doing drugs... lol Edited to add: Don't cut caffiene out all together... you'll end up naping like a 4 year old kid... just drink it in moderation. There are times now that if I drink 2 diet cokes in a day my hands start to shake and I feel like crap...
PLFXpert 0 #14 August 26, 2004 That is very true! When we were out of wine the other night, I had some of my boy-toy's whiskey & coke. I woke up several times that night. Have some wine, instead after 2 p.m. It's the FIRST thing I do when I get home after a long day.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

cvfd1399 0 #20 August 26, 2004 just start drinking tea, and slowley start adding more water to the tea pitcher to wean you off the caffine. I drink water 90%(10% ETOH) of the time now, no headaches, and food tastes alot better now.
tricky 0 #21 August 26, 2004 http://www.garynull.com/Documents/CaffeineEffects.htm "The medullary, respiratory, vasomotor and vagal centers are stimulated by caffeine. This effect is due to an increased sensitization to carbon dioxide but needs large doses to elicit this effect, 150 to 250 mg, parenterally. The spinal cord is stimulated at higher doses and convulsions and death may result. More than 10 g are needed for such toxicity to occur in man (Ritchie, 1975)." http://www.nsda.org/WhatsIn/caffeinecontent.html "Caffeine content in non alcohol beverages varies by brand, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration limits the maximum amount in soft drinks to 6 mg/ounce. Therefore, the most caffeine allowed in a 12 oz can of soft drinks is 72 mg." 12 oz. servings: Coke: 34mg of caffeine Diet Coke: 45mg Dr.Pepper: 41mg Mountain Dew: 55 mg Pepsi: 37 mg So drinking ... 300 (?) cans of coke could kill you?!?! Too bad you'd have to drink all 300 in approximately 5-6 hours and your stomach would self destruct way before then... Interesing..
MarkM 0 #22 August 26, 2004 Just go cold turkey. You'll be miserable for about a week or two, but after that you'll be fine. I used to drink Coke as my only fluid intake from around age 13 til 32, which was about a year ago. I'd go through something like 3 liters of soda a day. It didn't take too long for the cravings to go away and now I'm pretty much just on lemonade and water. But that first week or two without it is hell. Get past that and you won't even miss it anymore.
