Superstition

Recommended Posts

So I was going to post in the Bonfire, asking who does and who doesn’t consider themselves superstitious. Then I realised there is a more profound reason I want the DZ.com census. This is Skydive related.

I advocate that when one of us gets hurt or burns in, it is because he/she did something wrong.

On the other hand, there are many of us that argue “In this sport, you can do everything right and still die.”

I wonder, would the ones that believe the later say, have more of a superstitious tendency than those that subscribe to the first?

I will explain further when there are some votes.
[Warning:] spiritual mumbo-jumbo ahead.

How about: I'm kinda superstitious in a playful way with a slight amount of meaning.

For instance, I believe in karma in this sport, hands down, but I don't believe some of the old things like "one rig won't burn in twice" and such.
--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

black death is all yours mate, i will keep the blue skies though.
i am alittle superstitious. i always close my eyes on take off until the wheels leave the ground. when i forget i quickly close my eyes for a second. I started closing my eyes when we use to take of in cessna on grass, this kind of felt cool as the plane jumped around the paddock. i have now done it ever since.
Do you not think this will bring you bad karma by talking aboyt superstition on the internet?

I believe the latter not because I'm superstitious but because I was on the dz when someone who did everything right died.

Haha! No. I'm actually not supertitious.. that's bad luck :D I beleive in karma...but that requires bad energy for bad things to happen.

I'm hinting more at:How many of you are not superstitious by nature, but still won't jump today -or simply thinks harder- because a black cat crossed your path yesterday?

I'm not superstitious but I've been shook by a fortune cookie... there I said it.

My personal life has taken a few strange turns lately and I could very well consider myself to be 'flattered' beyond belief by some friends. I'm in some strange place this last month or so and considering a serious cutaway so to speak... and then I read this.

"Keep your feet on the ground even though friends flatter you."

I'm not superstious... but I believe that if I die in the act of skydiving... then the hand of God had stepped in to tell me my time was up...

not that I don't plan on fighting all the way down.

I always make a 'peace' sign with each hand in my lap when the wheels lift! A coach of mine used to do it and I realised after a bunch o' jumps with him, that it had rubbed off on me.

Bloody chinese aye!!! lol
you going to let the chinese stop you from doing what you love? How about a kiwi telling you your fortune? here goes. You will keep beliving in rubbish for other people to make money off you for the rest of your life.
Good luck with the reserve ride you have coming and then your mates all landing on top off you. God, that would make the papers and a hell of a laugh in the forums. Can you make sure someone videos your next few jumps as i would love to see it. lol
p.s. keep the fortune reading in your reserve pocket, just for good luck, and in case you do bounce there will have to be no investigation to hassle the dz, cause they will understand when they read the note.

No pin on the neck... will wear one after pre-second reserve ride.

It's 160-odd jumps. It's BOC.

And it's Canada.

yeah that was not directed at you. i just got given my first pin yesterday by a friend of mine from back home. we learnt to skydive togethor and he is now giving it up because of new wife. I dont think i will wear it though cause i do not wish for the same ending as he has just got. lol. I expect my wife(if ever someone will marry me) to realise that it is a hard choice between her and what i love more than anything i have ever known, oh aprt from dukes of hazzard, and CHipS.

Oh yeah, and when I say 'considering a serious cutaway'... I don't mean a reserve ride necessarily... I mean:

Admiting what I want
Sorting out my sh*t
Packing a bag
Kissing my mother on the head

and Cutting away

Dont worry about it we wont let that happen as a quick email of your license number around the dropzones and you will not be jumping anywhere. I think you should rephrase what you just wrote.....All this over a fortune cookie?

Woa Biggy!

Thank you so much!... I guess I'm having a real hard time expressing myself properly because this is all very strange to me.

I meant it like in the movie sense. "cutaway"

You a kiwi? You may know it as a "walkabout" ?

oh, an aussie may know it as a walkabout but a kiwi would say i am off to travell the world and party for the last eight years.
You are a strange one. Yeah the movies, huh, yeah that's not where i really pick up skydiving lingo, so to speak. Go the skydiving movies. denzel, keanu, charlie sheen, yeah you got too hate those movies, even though you have to watch them

I think all of you are freaking out a bit...:S

I believe the poster is planning on cutting away his old life and start a new one... i.e. sounds like moving out...B|

and I doubt a fortune cookie is truly the reason... it may have been necessary (i.e. arguements, problems that couldn't be resolved...) and the cookie was merely a catalyst...

don't take the advice from a bunch of people online too seriously... make any decision you do on your own.

Very superstitious, I have this ritual:

Empty my pockets
I turn on the cypres
zero the altimeter
turn on the protrack
check my pins
wear a parachute

and, get this

prior to the jump I check my harness routings and make sure my helmut is buckled - it's nuts I tell you, crazy. Sometimes I even check my teammates.

This obsessive compulsive thing has got to stop

...
Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

Sorry for the scare all. I doth presume too much.

Icon you got it. Cutaway the old, Start a new. However, 'twas not the furtune cookie that inspired it. 'twas the flattery of the girl I wish to take with me :o

'tis the fortune cookie that shakes me saying "Keep your feet on the ground even though friends flatter you." :|

And then a Tidlewave of: "does it mean don't go? does it mean don't jump?". I come to you all because I have never once cared about such trivial things. Now I'm carrying this stupid peice of papper around with me. :S

Think I will stick it in my reserve flap. Let it fly away should I require a ride.
