Superstition

Recommended Posts

I'm not superstitious, but I know a guy who doesn't ever use his helmet camera because bad things had happened the few times times he did wear it.

I did not find anything in reference to getting hurt by a necklace only the original post about a nipple ring? The necklace will break before it even chaffs the skin. Besides it is in my jumpsuit under a zipper held by neoprene, and under a shirt. Only murphys law will get that thing out. Fu@k murphy tho he is a nagging bastard!;)

I won't jump without my closing pin necklace around my neck.

I won't jump with my closing pin necklace around my neck. Here's why.

There is another post floating around somewhere that was out about the same time as that one... Guy had a hard face plant non-plf landing and took the closing pin through the neck.

I have one but mostly wear it off the DZ.

Hey man. I think that the fortune cookie is just a catalyst, and that you've had those doubts all along. Don't make any earth shattering decisions lightly, they're hard to reverse. And that idea of putting it in your reserve flap is awesome, do itB|

As to me, I'm not superstitious about my gear, but I'm beginning to develop this weird habit. When people give each other the ritual high fives at around 10 grand, I really don't like to give someone a high five with my left hand. It somehow feels that I've jinxed them. I usually just suppress it, but hey.

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

That's the one I was looking for... Didn't search long enough I guess.

Hey Eugene!!

Thanks bud :)
Thanks to a bunch of posts on here, I'm happy to learn that many peope have little superstitions and rituals... I never considered myself that way and was shook both by the significace of the fortune and the fact that I just couldn't just ignore it.

Going out this weekend? Wanna carpool?

when i ordered my tiger stripes a few people seriously suggested it was a bad idea. Why? "because what do tiggers do?? they BOUNCE!!! "

well yea but they also get back up and do it again...B|

I certainly have several rituals i perform every jump day, and every dive, but those are related to safety, not superstition...

I'm not in anyway superstitious except for one thing.

Every known member of my family has died during the month of August or within 2 weeks before or after. (In fact, there's only a few of us left.) I don't know if it's a curse, coincedence, or what, but ever since my Mother died August 12, 2000 I decided to narrow down the risks during this time period. Therefore, I don't jump in August!

Call me silly, but I definintely take on a whole different mind set then. Only nine more days left...[:/]

I love most of the skydiving superstitions, but I don't really believe in them. I like getting my logbook bounceproofed, and I like getting a two figher "five" from the other jumpers in the plane before I exit, but I don't think those things really protect me--They're just fun. The same thing goes for sacrificing a skydiver to the beer/weather goods on a bad weather day. Every sport has a few fun superstitions--They give the sport character.

I'm not superstitious but I've been shook by a fortune cookie... there I said it.

Oooh, I voted 'not superstitious', but this reminded me of my own fortune cookie story.

When my SO and I were travelling around the US, we used to go to those 'all you can eat' Chinese places at least twice a week and always looked forward to our fortune cookies. We'd try to make the fortunes fit into what we were doing at the time.

One night we got our cookies, I can't remember what mine said, but his was empty. He grumped about being ripped off, we joked about how he had no future then forgot about it.

Less than two days later he went in.

I'm still not superstitious, but you've got to admit that's a spooky coincidence! :S

nothing to see here

I don't think I am superstitious, I believe good luck come from being prepared.
In reference to wearing any jewerly when jumping, Al Frisby once told me, "If you can imagine it, it can happen." Wearing any type of jewelry is not being prepared.

I think they mean writing in the next 10 jumps or so, before you make them. Just the numbers, of course.

Negative.

Have someone sign the last "jump" when you get a new logbook. It is then "bounceproofed" - since you've already gotten that jump signed you can't go in until after you've made it.

I didn't find a poll answer to suit me.

I don't consider myself superstitious, really, but I do get sort of "ritualistic" at some things.

For one thing, I try to be respectful of people who have had accidents or died skydiving. I don't go off on them the way I do when idiots die in rollover car wrecks because they were too stupid to wear their seatbelts.

One ritual I do consistently is blowing kisses. This, to me, signifies affection and/or respect.
With regard to skydiving, right after opening, after I've unstowed brakes and done a control check, I blow a kiss to each of my bare feet (my landing gear and a symbolic sense of my freedom in the sky), to the sky itself, and to my canopy. I don't know why I first did it, during AFP, (perhaps because I was glad to have a canopy inflated overhead and knew I was gonna live!) but it's stuck with me ever since.

Okay, now thinkin' about it has me jonesin' hard for another skydive!

Is this really being superstitious - it seems like logical safe practice to me lol.

I had the same thing...my family went to canada when i was in high school and the night before we were flying back to the US we went to a chinese restaurant. My cookie had no fortune and my mom told me that was very bad luck (she was joking with me) I did not sleep the whole night because i was convinced I was going to die in a plane crash the next day. Now i check my cookies before i open them, if i cant see the paper i dont open it. But, No im not superstitious :S

I think your vote would then be: Superstition does not apply to my life *except* for in the sport.

You may not think something specific will go wrong if you don't blow those kisses... but I'd bet you feel strange if you forget to?
