Whatever it is if you have done, if you have done something out of order, say. "I've been thinking about the issue of blindsiding you. I agree that I should have . That's kind of keeping it light, which goes to you trying to fix the relationship with your boss. And it reminds him of what he said. Then if he is a fair person he'll feel stupid and aplogise.
