mouth 0 #1 July 30, 2004 I got a call from my father to come look at a car for my oldest child this evening. When questioned it was a 2000 Toyota Solara SLE Convertable. I was so excited about the price and mileage until I contacted my insurance company. OMG...for 6 months on a 16 yo female the insurance is almost 1300. I freaked out. I checked on a plain Toyota Camry and it was 1100 every 6 months. This is with the B average and drivers ed. WTF? Do these companies really think that is reasonable? Thank God she isn't failing and can't pass driver's ed class. Add to the drama as I got the wild idea to put her as primary driver on my 2002 Toyota Highlander. Can you believe the insurance is only 750 every 6 months? WHY? There must be a reason whigh the Highlander is rated on of the top mid sized SUV's and the Solara is one of the safest convertables and yet insurance rates vary so much. I'm pissed but I bought the car anyway. I'm going to drive the convertable. (GEE, not like I'm being put out or anything ) and giving her the Highlander, but the principle behind it sucks. The insurance on a 2002 model car which cost 10K more should be higher. I think insurnace companies rip us off. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. AggieDave 6 #2 July 30, 2004 Its because its a convertable. They don't just make up the insurance rates, apparently in the past, 16yr old chicks and convertables caused a problem (gee, I don't see how or why...) Pour little you, you're gonna look HOT driving around a convertable.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." bmyers8568 0 #3 July 30, 2004 yes the insureance companies do rip us off. But in your case the Solara is considered a sports car and to put a young driver behind the wheel of that car is asking for trouble, in their opinion. But atleast you don't live in Louisiana where the insurance rates are lower than only California. For 3 vehicles one with full coverage I pay 1900 every 6 months. And that is with a clean driving record.

Muenkel 0 #7 July 30, 2004 Lisa, Maybe this will make you feel better. Back in 1983 when I was 19, I got a brand new Camaro (back when they were cool). My insurance was $3000 per year. I think back now, and I know I was nuts. _________________________________________ Chris

She doesn't have a convertible, not many came out that year, and I wouldn't call her's a sport car, but the convertible is great looking! Have fun! marc

mouth 0 #13 July 30, 2004 Ash is quite upset that she can't be principle driver on it, but I promised she could drive it every now and then to school if she promised to park well away from everyone. I still can't believe the car is a 2000 model without a scratch or ding and less than 50,000 miles. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. Breezejunky 0 #14 July 30, 2004 My explanation is that if all 16 year olds had to buy their own cars they wouldn't be as likely to crack them up and drive up insurance rates
mouth 0 #15 July 30, 2004 She works at her dance studio to pay some of her dance bills. She regularly dances from 4:00 until 9:30 4-5 nights a week either assisting in classes or taking classes. Then she comes home to do homework and has maintained a B average on Honors level classes. Wrecks are going to happen to kids and adults. Yeah, kids make up a large part of it, but I think a lot of that has to do with their being young and not having lots of experience. There are quite a few adults that I dont' think need a vehicle either. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. happythoughts 0 #16 July 30, 2004 Insurance rates are higher for teenage males. It's all statistics. You're lucky she a girl. From 16-25, ins rates for guys suck. I had sports cars and put my mom as primary driver. My parents weren't allowed to drive it.
PhreeZone 20 #17 July 30, 2004 Lisa.. Please tell me Ash can find her way back home at least now You wanna hear something worse? My 97 Probe was costing me $1800 a year in insurance at 22. I sold it, got my '03 Civic and its only costing me $1475. Difference is 1) A .2 liter smaller engine, 2) a Civic is a sedan and not a sports car like the Probe was . For the most part year of car is only a small factor in the pricing of insurance. Engine size (more for V6, HUGE increase if its a V8), manual/auto (Auto is a tad cheaper), classification of car, average cost of repairs, and Driving record. It might be cheaper to insure a 2001 car then a 2000 if everything else is identical except the average cost of repairs. Stupid huh?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
peregrinerose 0 #18 July 30, 2004 QuoteMy explanation is that if all 16 year olds had to buy their own cars they wouldn't be as likely to crack them up and drive up insurance rates I agree completely. Went 4WD and there was this freaking 16 year old spoiled brat driving a brand new 30K Jeep with all the perks. He refused to get it muddy. Wimp. My first car was a $1200 tempo. It taught me how to change a tire and do basic mechanic work. I was 21. It survived my first and only car accident and had dirt cheap insurance even though I was on my own insurance policy. I can't understand buying a kid a new car, they should earn it themselves, it's one of those experience that teaches a lot of different things. skydived19006 4 #20 July 30, 2004 As it has been said you’re lucky she isn’t a boy (Is penis the base for the word penalize/penalty). Insurance rates are based on statistics, and boys statistically cost the insurance companies more to insure. It’s interesting to me that it’s allowed to set rates on sex, seems like it would be deemed discrimination in any other arena. They don’t officially base rates on race, but in most areas the races are somewhat segregated within residential areas, and they do base rates on your residence. Also, my uncle who is my insurance man told me that your credit rating is a consideration in insurance rates these days. I was 18 in 1983 (Geezer, beat you to it). I didn’t pay over $300 for a vehicle until I was 27 or 28. I drove Baja bugs, and a 1948 Chevy truck, I did spent money on em after I bought them.Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else. BBKid 0 #21 July 31, 2004 Boo Frickety Hoo! If I had tried to get isured on something like that (the car the thread starter was talking about) when I was 17 (legal age to drive in UK), I'd have been paying about $3600! And that's not for fully comprehensive insurance. Plus, we pay $7.20 for a gallon of unleaded petrol! 98% tax!!!! Moral of the story, quit whining and suck it up! Edit: I can't spell, sigh......
