Dude sucked in to jet engine in Moscow

Recommended Posts

That happened to an Alaska airlines mechanic years ago but he managed to hang on and the mechanics running the engine immediantly shut the engine down before the guy got to the first stage compressor blades.

I believe that 737 was powered by the JT8D instead of the CFM56 (lot further to the compressor).

I heard the vacuum sucked the guys eyes out of his sockets but the med people put them back. Of course, that may have just come from several retellings of the original story ;)

Saw a video (scary clips show) of this happening to a guy through a harrier engine (I think it was a harrier anyway - it was certainly on a carrier and had crescent intakes below the cockpit). Again his clothes got caught on something and he hung up inches from the blades. His helmet and headset got sucked through the engine and the pilot shut the engine down immediately. He was fine.

The guy looked all limp like a piece of string as he got sucked in - was very freaky.

On a related note - saw an episode of Top Gear (uk car show) the other night where the drove (by remote) a couple of cars behind 747 engines. The ford escort got blown 50ft and tumbled trashing itself. The Citroen 2cv literally exploded and took off landing 100 or more feet away.

They said their timing had to be right as they could only put the engines on full power for 30seconds before they started to rip up the runway.

Them's some powerful plants.

The Intakes on the 737 are not that close to the ground

the engines on the 737 are some of the closest to the ground of any comercial airliner... seems like it would not be very hard...

I got this story when I was working for the General Dynamics F-16 division (now part of Lockheed Martin), at Carswell AFB:

An airshow was being set up and included some parked F-16's on display. In order to keep spectators from touching the a/c, the area was "roped" off using that yellow plastic chain between portable posts. The guying doing this had a bunch of plastic chain left over in a box, so he slid it under one of the a/c near the nose gear. Later that day...

(Now if you don't know what an F-16 looks like, go googling for a photo before continuing...)

One of the security people heard an F-16 spooling up in the display area. It had been decided to add one of the static-dislplay a/c to the show. As the guy looked toward the a/c, he saw it had sucked up one end of the chain, and it was sitting there sucking the chain out of the box, just like a kid with a plate of spaghetti.

The security guy running toward the a/c with wilding flapping arms, caused the pilot to abort the engine start.

The Intakes on the 737 are not that close to the ground - How on earth did that guy get sucked in?!?

Oh yes they most certainly are.

Those high-bypass fans are so big around that the undersides of the nacelles are flattened.

edit - My bad now - didn't see the correction above.

They would also be expected to be sober.

What's more fucked up is this nagging feeling like I wish there had been someone on-hand with a camcorder.

...Is that wrong?

What's even more fucked up is I wish I had been there with a nice grill and some good BBQ sauce. :S

it was recently on MythBusters show (US) when they try to blow a taxi cab (dodge intrepid) to reproduce a myth that some taxi cab was blown by jet somewhere in Brasil (?). it didn't happen. they used two engines and car didn't move much,. they say it's a myth. on other hand ford escort is smaller.

Actually, on the show - due to insurance, they were forced to use engines much less powerful than those that were supposed to have blown over the taxi in Brazil. They couldn't make it work.

BUT...at the end of the show, they ran footage from the airport cameras showing the actual event - it happened.
