Faber 0 #1 July 25, 2004 Any of you guys took up hanggliding? Im about to take the 2. move(i have watched and so on)to take a couse, and wonder if any here has experience about hanggliding?? Why i take Hanggliding instead of Paragliding is that i feel that Paragliding is too close to BASE and skydive,i want to fly a real wing whith out a motor Stay safe Stefan Faber
Zenister 0 #2 July 25, 2004 real wing? is the rigidity of a wing what makes it 'real' havent tried hangliding yet...something about it seems 'wrong' to me.. i cant quite define what... I'm far more interested in learning to soar than hangliding...although paragliding interests me from a canopy control standpoint...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. bch7773 0 #3 July 26, 2004 I want to do it someday. I agree though, hangliding seems more interesting then paragliding. MB 3528, RB 1182

Faber 0 #5 July 26, 2004 i guess im going to try it out next month, atleast i payed for the cours(i will get the mony back as i buy a hangglider in aprox 1 year from now(now thats a deal..) when i dais i think that the hangglider is more like a wing than a paraglider i mean theres metal inside it,you cant just coplas it like a canopy or paraglider and therefore it will be a new way to learn how to fly.. im sure it will be way fun... Faber 0 #7 July 26, 2004 well i didnt in the start either the thing is that the Hangglider club experienced alot of people wanting to be hangglider pilots just to drop out in the middel of it all.´Therefore they raised the price for a course pretty high so people dont want to take it unless they have made some ground work first...When im ½ way through my education ill need my own glider. When I have that i will get refounded the course price on the bill i show the club. That makes the club sure that i dont drop out on them just like that and if i do they will some how be payed off their effort to teach me. All pilots in the club will be educated(over 2 years)so they can teach new students, that way im gonna pay the course off by lessons when new students arrive.. Up not like anything you could find in the US were evrybody need mony just if people want to smell their fart(joke). The club im gonna join is by vulantarie people that only does it for the sport and not to get mony back on it.... I like the idea, evrybody gets happy in the end.If you just want to try out you gonna pay for the rolercoaster dive,if you burn for the sport it also helps you. ohh and membership costs 1000dkr a year, thats about 125us$ i guess..its all about the sport and just let it run, whith out make it a living... mcrocker 0 #8 July 26, 2004 I went hangliding in New Zealand a couple years ago. At the time I had about just got my A license (25 jumps or so). It was truly amazing, I really felt like a hawk, just flying around on the thermals. We ended up getting about 1000' above our launch point and swooped the van and others waiting. I felt like I could be up there all day. The freakiest thing was just running at top speed towards and off the edge of a cliff. I told the tandem hanglide instructor that I was a skydiver and it looked like he relaxed, knowing I wouldn't freak out on him. Think of all the things you love about canopy flight, only better. I highly recommend everyone do a tandem hangglide sometime in their life.

MarkM 0 #10 July 26, 2004 I did a couple hang glides, nothing really serious though. Most people into hang gliding just soar or do cross country, para gliders are a little more open to things like acrobatics and tend to have a younger crowd(at least in my area). I thought about getting into hang gliding acrobatics, but skydiving is less dangerous and it's more accessible. If I ever slow down I might get back into hang gliding for the soaring aspect of the sport. That's pretty safe.
Shawndiver 0 #11 July 27, 2004 I started hang gliding in 1993, and am a Hang 4 rated pilot. I like to say that skydiving is an adreneline mainline rush, while hang gliding is more like an adreneline IV drip. I now alternate weekends, one skydiving, the other hang gliding. Be aware though that it is a VERY equipment intensive sport, you need a garage for a 17 foot long glider, special racks for your car, etc. But it is the purest form of sustained flight that you can experience! Good Luck! Shawn_________________
PhillyKev 0 #12 July 27, 2004 I did a tandem hang glide a couple years before my tandem skydive. It was pretty cool, but didn't grab me like jumping did. I think if I were to go in that direction I'd check out paragliding first.
Conundrum 1 #13 July 27, 2004 I've always wanted to hang-glide and in fact, it was between that and skydiving. Anyone know a good place in SoCal?
MarkM 0 #14 July 27, 2004 QuoteI've always wanted to hang-glide and in fact, it was between that and skydiving. Anyone know a good place in SoCal? Check http://www.ushga.org/ for schools. I do know one part of Cal has a really nice spot of gliding. There are some sheer cliff walls along the coast and when the sea breeze kicks in from the ocean it creates an up draft off the cliffs that makes for great gliding. Saw a show once on hang gliding that featured a good school located there. I think Cal in general has some nice areas for gliding.
Shawndiver 0 #15 July 27, 2004 MarkM is talking about Torrey Pines in San Diego. http://www.flytorrey.com There is also Sylmar http://windsports.com/home.html. High Adventure is run by a guy named Rob McKenzie, one of the best and most recognized teachers in the country.http://www.flytandem.com/ That should give you a starting place! MC208B 0 #16 July 27, 2004 I learned to hang glide in 76, bought my wing in 77. It was fun. I always had the feeling that something bad was going to happen tho....... I lived in Wyoming then and the launch point was about 2,000 feet above the valley. On hot days it was pretty easy to gain a couple thousand feet above the launch point in the thermals. One time I followed a hawk for quite awhile till he spotted me. It was so cool watching him pull his wings in and dive several hundred feetThrow out emergency parachutes came out for hanggliders in 77 (I think). I wanted to buy one but my X wife (now) said no dice then, they were expensive-400 bucks!!! So, I sold my wing in 80 and stuck to flying fixed wing A/C till the skydiving bug bit me. Faber 0 #18 July 27, 2004 i can see were your going, but fact is that they realiced that people wasnt that in a hurry to learn to fly as it costed alot more to start up at,and if they didnt liked it they would loose that mony.. that keeps some rollercoasterrider away.. they should stik to tandems thats why our sports have them...
