Your concern that he will simply travel to another DZ is easy to handle. A brief call with a heads-up for the other area DZOs will let them know to keep an eye out for the guy. Even in the middle of Florida or Sol Cal, this would only amount to 10 or 15 calls, and should take less than an hour total.

Ignorant question here, but if the jumper is dangerously reackless and will not improve their ways after being talked to at length etc. can't their jumping permit just be suspended or even revoked?

ETA that I'm talking about serious infractions here.

Baksteen brings up a pretty good questions:

Under what circumstances, if possible at all, can you get your license revoked?

He can read about that in the Dutch version of the SIM. We have a sanction committee (is that the right translation..?)
http://www.parachute.nl/sac.html that has the authority to keep someone from skydiving for a period of time but only for serious infractions and only after other (lighter) sanctions didn't work.

AFAIK you could always go to another country (not that hard here) and get licensed and jump there though...

But you can't just kick him off the DZ. He's a good guy, firstly, and we don't want to ostracize him. But more importantly as regards safety, if you ban him from the DZ, he goes to another DZ and does the same thing around new people that haven't already been warned about him and don't know who he is.

My my, how times have changed, and not always for the better. When I started back in the seventies in upstate NY, grounded wuz GROUNDED. Your name would "go out on the teletype" to the other upstate dropzones and you wouldn't be able to get on a load at most or any of them.

One of the reasons skydivers are so tight is that we trust each other with our lives. If you can't trust somebody with your life, then DON'T jump with them. Be "uncool" about it and raise holy hell. It beats all that ash dive and "fly free forever" bullshit.

'He' did, what with having passed his B-licence theoretical examination last November and all that. :)
I was but curious about the rules in other countries, as it would seem that the only punishment for reckless behaviour is banishment from the DZ, or for non-iinstructors/DZO's to choose not to jump with the person.

From memory:
In the Netherlands, any instructor has the right to issue an official sanction to a jumper if they break the rules.

The mildest of these is an official warning, cautioning the jumper to abide by the rules.

Next, we have the official reprimand, issued for a more serious infraction, or for an infraction for which a warning has been issued previously.

Also, one can be grounded. This sanction is typically issued for a serious infraction which led to/ had the possibility to lead to serious material damage or personal injury to the jumper himself or a third party. People can also be groudned for infractions for whcih a reprimand has been issued previously, from any time period between twelve hours and two months.

After that, we get the most serious sanction an instructor can issue, a suspension of certain ratings, licences or even the jumping permit. Again, this sanction is issued for severe infractions on the rules, causing or possibly causing gear damage or severe injuries to oneself or a third party. A suspension can also be issued for an infraction the jumper was previously grounded for.
The sanction committee will review the suspension and either revoke the licence/rating/jumping permit of the jumper, or cancel the sanction. If the committee does not do so within eight weeks, the sanction is automatically cancelled, I think. Note: this is a temporary sanction, so there;s no time limit.

Revoking a licence/rating/jumping permit can only be done by the sanction committee. There is a lengthy minimum time period which I forgot, after which the jumper is free to try for the rating/licence once more, provided they meet the requirements.

With all sanctions, the instructor must file a report within a certain time period and the jumper is free to file a protest within a certain time period.

That would be bad publicity.

Besides, all them craters in the landing area would be a hazard to the normal jumpers.

So what is wrong with telling him like it is??? Todays sociaty is so damn sad, most kids these days are going to be so worthless. Got to have a 32nd place trophy for little leage, schools telling all of the kids there winners, and parents telling there kids they cant do wrong becuase they are the BEST. Now some cant tell a DGIT that he is a reckless dumbass, and he cant jump with anybody untill he gets a little smarter and safer.:S:S I mean he is a nice guy and all. Who gives a shit if he is indangering others lifes>:(

And your obvious desire to ostracize him and push him away will make him go to another dz where they don't know him and he'll keep doing the same shit until someone DOES get hurt... what does that solve? Not a dam'n thing.... take him up on 2 & 3 ways and work on his skills... oh, wait.. I forgot, skydivers don't pay it forward or help those who obviously need it....

With 100 jumps and 2 years in sport, I doubt you've had much opportunity to deal with people who just won't listen. Rest assured that some of us neither appreciate nor agree with your final comment.

Rest assured that you don't have to have 1k jumps, or 10 years in the sport to take the final comment as a big FU. I took it as a bit of a slap in the face. B|>:(
