So...what if you are getting a 'bad feeling' about your next jump?

Recommended Posts

I get that bad feeling everytime I jump with that Guy Jeff or Rookie...and it's usually a pretty accurate feeling ("It was the booties." has got to be my favorite.).

I just went ahead and got a full face helmet. That seems to help some.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

Remmy don't be all down on ESP...don't want ya to throw this into Speaker's Corner! ;)

Just because you may not have ever experienced that doesn't mean it doesn't exist in some people's lives.

It's kind of like in-born musical talent or any other gift I'm thinking...some get it, some don't.

Some of those people wanting 'scientific proof' of these types of gifts are those that a.) Don't have it and b.) Are slightly jealous of those that do, so they try to refute it...bummer, because if it harms no one else, why would you (not you but people in general) want to take something special away from a person or try to make them believe that they weren't blessed? :|

I, myself, would go jump anyway. Mainly because there is obviously something that is mentally blocking me from jumping. If I jump through it, then I know I will be okay the next time and the next. I do, however, do a thorough gear check on those occasions.

I say jump!

Because every time I have had something go wrong on a jump my mother has had a feeling.

And everytime you never had "something" happen, she didnt have any bad feelings?

Come on now....

From what she has told me, no. She says that it hasn't been a "bad" feeling really, just that she needs to be there or just an uneasy feeling. I don't know but I think that there is something to it.

BTW... I am really not a superstitious person.

I'm not going to go down that route. :D

Beleive what you want: ESP, Jesus, CIA nanobots having control over your brain functions... You see people being blessed, I see people with delusions.

My point about self fulfilling prophecies is that if you get a bad feeling, for whatever reason, and go with it, you will be more nervous and probably cause the problem you were fearing.

Shit does just happen, but then, you wouldnt have a premonition about it it it just happened, right?

closed...do not attempt to open!> But here again Remmy, Ok you think those people are 'delusional'...so do you think it's your job to tell them that? I mean hell, I think you're pretty ugly, but do I gotta tell you that? That's just being mean. ;)

..and that's the part I was agreeing with.

Felt that way - I'm sure we all have. Get up there and do somthing simple.

Shit i just sat my hapy ass down a few noths ago off of 32 ways, becuase I had a bad feeling.

One jumper killed himslef under canopy, the very next jump after they took him off, one of the people on our 32 smacked her ass real hard on the ground (she was fine). I just started thinking to myself, "Hey, bad things happen in 3's". SO I set down. Number 3 happend about an hour later. NOthing real bad but blood was invloved and I was happy I listened to my fellings.

Nope. But considering this is a discussion forum, I think its fair to mention it!:)

Yeah, you're right, it is a discussion forum, and you were offering your perspective on the subject. It's all good. B|

I agreed with Dom. You should always trust your feelings/instinct/intuition...call it what you will, it's like a guardian angel from w/in you...should not fight that feeling.

There were a few times I took myself off of a load/rode the plane down...just b/c something tells me not to jump at that particular moment.

OK, I didn't even finish reading all the replies in this thread, because I get the jist....

My two cents: I've that that "bad feeling" three times. Once was on a really rushed night jump, the other was on a sketchy wind day, the other, the weather looked theatening. I decided not to jump twice out of the three.

THE RESULTS:

Night Jump (didn'[t go): All four jumpers out of the Cessna landed out. This is a NIGHT JUMP.... Out is NOT GOOD. One sprained ankle on one of the jumpers. It took us about an hour to find him.

Sketchy wind day: I went despite the feeling. I had a great jump with my buddy, we split and opened. The winds kept shifting on me and I was getting really nervous. I overshot the landing, hit a draft, brainlocked and landed with no brakes on my tailbone. Two compressed vertebrae took me out of any activity for close to six months.

Sketchy weather day (didn't go) : see http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=168528;search_string=Gatineau;#168528 for more info as to the results of that load. Carlos, the guy that broke both his legs took my spot at the last minute....

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but this sport has FAR too much ego at times. I got alot of ribbing for backing out on these jumps when I did it, but after the fact, I also got alot of handshakes congratulating me for trusting my gut....

That is all.

FIDO, go jump. You can mind fuck yourself out of everything in life, look past it and jump. If you're still wigging out, then just do a solo or a Hop and Pop.

I have to disagree dave. One morning I got to the dropzone and I don't know why, I just felt that there was going to be a cut-away that day and if I went up it was going to be me and it wouldn't be pretty. So I sat my happy ass on the ground, talked with the riggers all day, learned a heap of stuff and sure enough - there was a cut-away. As soon as that happened - it was off to board the plane for the next load B|

Can't explain it - but when that little voice starts talking - sometimes you better pay attention.

I have a bad feeling for my next jump 3500 hop & pop. I actually had a dream where i died on that jump before i even started AFF.

I been trying to do that jump for two weekends now Wind, work has not let me do it yet.

I will be doing my hop and pop this weekend if it's nice.

Whenever I jump with Flyhi (A.K.A Hollywood) I get that feeling like i just got kicked in the groin with a steel toe boot. And usually I'm right, with him going low, or trying to do a back in and end up tracking away from the formation, or him funneling the formation and canon balling on my head, anybody who has had the absolute privilege to jump with Hollywood will be in for ride they will never forget. Happy trails!
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

It all depends on YOU.My brain fucks with me at the most inopportune times. I am learning to tell the difference between my brain fucking with me and that little something that says it just ain't right. This applies to all areas of my life not just jumping..

example of brain fuck...... just made a solo hop and pop and my brains decides to ask me WTF was I thinking jumping out of an airplane and telling me what a dumb fuck I was for doing it..Yelled shut the fuck up I gotta pull dammit!

example of feeling I should have listened to...

AT altitude in mesquite on a load my friends said NOT to get on I had a "feeling" telling me I should just stay on the plane and ride it down. My ego said fuck that those girls jumped I gotta jump to... I got away with just road rash and a sprained/broken middle finger on my left hand that still hasn't healed..

I have stayed off loads because I just didn't feel "right"

One of the golden rules is to "know when to say when"

Telling people to just suck it up and jump is FUCKED...It is their life not yours.. are you going to throw on your superman cape and fly up and save them if shit DOES hit the fan...

Did you miss the point of this post I didn't

He was asking for what we would do and our opinion.
I gave him mine. Any one can look at my Jump # and know that I don't know shit about skydiving. I am in the very beginning of a never ending learning experience. But I do have an opinion and shared it.

Bad feeling because of the dream or bad feeling because you're about to do something new that appears dangerous and something you haven't tried yet? I'm sure plenty of people have already told you that hop n' pops aren't a big deal, so I will spare telling you this (even though I just did). ;)

Our minds have a way of playing tricks on us. Sometimes these are related to things which are more mental than physical and sometimes there is a real physical barrier and our minds are acting as survival instincts. When the task is mental, we need to dig deep down into why our mind is telling us that we can't do this task and don't jump until we've over come the mental issues. But it's not always that easy.

The issues you are having concerning your up and coming hop n' pop are likely no different than the issues I had in my mind a few weeks ago as I prepared to make my first stowed exit on a BASE jump. I have found my PC hundreds of times on a skydive and logic would dictate that physically I wouldn't have problems finding my PC on a BASE jump. But my mind was messing with me for many a hand held exits until I finally said "#### it, I'm going stowed this jump". Now going stowed off of the bridge isn't a mental block the way it once was and you'll be the same with your hop n' pop.

Bottom line is that it is your life and you are the one in charge of it. If you don't want to do something, don't do it. Maybe you'll change your mind in the future. But don't push forward into uncharted terrain until you are mentally ready to deal with whatever consequences come your way.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Woke up in sweats this morning bc I allowed a kid to jump my rig last weekend. He walked off without packing it, then I called his attention to the fact that I let him jump it, so the least he could do is pack it. His friends were waiting, he packed fast...so I had a nightmare that I had a bag lock, fought it til 1500, cutaway at 700 ft, and made one turn into final and landed..but hell, I stood it up!:D

No the only reason I feel a little nervous is because of the dream.

For one thing I have gown over every situation I can in my head and what I should do incase something goes wrong.

I did ok on my 5500 it was a lot of fun.
If it was not for the dream I would not be even posting any concern.

Thank you for your post :)
